Tiverton Power Plant Among 'Dirtiest' in State

A new report claims Tiverton's power plant on on Progress Road is amongst the "dirtiest power plants" in Rhode Island.

A new report released this past Friday named Tiverton's power plant amongst the "dirtiest" power plants in Rhode Island.

The report, “America’s Dirtiest Power Plants," released by Environment America, listed the Tiverton Power Plant on Progress Road as one of the top carbon emitters in the Ocean State, according to ecoRInews

Rhode Island's other top emitters also included the Rhode Island State Energy Center in Johnston. The nearby Brayton Point Power Station in Somerset, MA, was also named as the second "dirtiest" power plant for Massachusetts.

Tiverton Power was sold to a Canadian power company in 2011 after its previous owners filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Edmonton-based Capital Power Corporation purchased the Tiverton power plant, as well as another power plant in Maine, for $315 million two years ago.
