  • On the blog post Pay a Little for a Better Grinnel's Beach?

    TECH

    10:52 am on Tuesday, May 14, 2013

I'm against any user fee for Tiverton residents to use this beach. If anything, the user fee for non-Tiverton residents should maybe increase.
It would take very little time or money for the town to fix the shower heads at the beach. Perhaps volunteers should repair or replace the picnic tables.
As far as cleanliness goes, the town is already paying a life guard and someone to collect parking fees during the day. Those employees should probably make more of an effort to ensure the beach is clean.
Let's be honest, there are a lot of Fall River residents who use this beach. Due to it's close proximity to Fall River, that is unlikely to change. The only thing that could change is during the day, increase the fee for them to park there.

    12:22 pm on Tuesday, April 30, 2013

A lot of good questions are being posed here.
    1. There is a lot of vacant commercial real estate in North Tiverton, and there doesn't seem to be much economic demand for new local businesses. So why would Tiverton Crossings be any different?

The Carpianto Group has a proven track record of success and if they are willing to invest this much money, they have done their homework. Thousands upon thousands of cars drive down Route 24 every day. The truth is that most people who would visit Tiverton Crossings will not live in Tiverton at all. It's all about location location location. A small commercial storefront will have trouble surviving on Main Road. But the type of development they are proposing here is very different.

    2. I am certain this development would not lower my taxes. However, it will help with diversification of the tax base and is a step in the right direction. And it would mean jobs for local people.

    3. These developers know that people in Southeastern Massachusetts, who at one time might have visited Aquidneck Island, are not going to want to shell out over $5 to cross the bridge. They envision this as being very similar to Garden City or Chapel View. There aren't any upscale shopping plazas like that in Southeastern Mass. This is a grab for their money.

    4. The people on Souza Road need to get over themselves. Viti has been there for decades and there has been talk about putting a mall there for decades.

I would love to see what houses have recently sold for, not what they are selling for. Knowing the sale price of houses that have recently closed would more helpful to readers of Patch. I know it requires more research, but it's something Patch used to do on a weekly basis.

I don't think I missed the point. The point the author is trying to convey is that Rhode Island, and other states, should lower their taxes. I happen to agree. However, it would also behoove the author to do some fact checking.

There some factual inaccuracies with this blog. Number 1, I think the author is probably referring the Jan Malik's proposal to eliminate the state sales tax, not the state income tax. To my knowledge, there is no pending proposal in the state house to eliminate the state income tax.
Secondly, the state of Delaware does have a state income tax. They do not have a state sales tax.

  • On the article Local Pols: Municipal Aid Plan Can Wait — Use the Money for Bridges

    TECH

    9:01 am on Friday, February 15, 2013

I'm at a loss regarding why Felag and Edwards would reject municipal aid and instead want to use it to fund bridge maintenance. East Bay Communities need this money to fund municipal pensions and keep property taxes down (or as down as they can be.) There are so many more creative ways to fund maintenance on the bridges. This idea makes absolutely no sense to me. If we don't use the municipal aid for its intended purpose, my property tax increase would be more than I would pay to cross the bridge.
I want no tolls, but not this way.

As a side note, I've noticed Patch does a lot of posts for "Just Listed" and "Open Houses." But they have stopped publicizing sales of houses and what the purchase price was. Does any one know why?

I would also recommend that every person email David Cicilline, Sheldon Whitehouse, and Jack Reed. They aren't going to have an impact on the decision making in the state General Assembly. But they can lobby the Federal Highway Administration on our behalf to block this toll. If we had been smart enough to elect Brendan Doherty, he would have done that for us. Now we need to demand that Cicilline, Whitehouse, and Reed petition the FHA on our behalf!

"With a report due to the Federal Government in January it is likely that the report has been already written and these meetings are perfunctory."
I agree with you Nancy. This is why every person against the toll should send an email or letter to the Federal Highway Administration. They are going to be looking at the DOT's perfunctory report, but they can also take input from average citizens. Email them at: execsecretariat.fhwa@fhwa.dot.gov
Or send them a letter at:
    1200 New Jersey Ave., SE

The RIDOT has already made its mind up about this bridge toll. As Rep. Edwards stated, they want to push this thing through for the summer. They want to hold these meeting back to back, without much advertising or fanfare, right before the holidays. They will claim they did their due diligence and received public input. But no matter how many letters they receive or how many people attend these meetings, their mind is made up.
While everyone who can should attend these meetings, the Federal Highway Administration is where our efforts should be focused. They have final authority over whether or not these bridge tolls will be enacted.
