ReplyGood news, but wondering how Middletown outranked Portsmouth and Tiverton when per pupil spending and student/teacher ratio are higher, while graduation rate is much lower.

On the article Tiverton Council to Consider 62-Acre Development Proposal Tonight
Mike

ReplyThe council isn't inserting itself at all. "Monday's meeting is an informal pre-application review ..."
As a new resident who selected Tiverton for its unique rural character and absence of big-box stores, I do have several questions, though, that I hope will be answered:
1. Is there a market for a hotel of this size?
2. Is there a demand for retail and corporate office space?
3. Is there a shortage of residential units?
4. Will this be just another contrived town center that struggles to become vibrant?
5. Is there appropriate infrastructure in place to support this development?
6. What about traffic?
7. What about environmental impact?
8. What about impact on neighbors?
9. What about impact on local small businesses?
10. What are the tax implications (best- and worst-case scenarios)?
11. What are the aesthetics of the development?
12. Can the developer point to a successful portfolio of similar developments?I hope Patch and Sakonnet Times cover tonight's meeting and provide an in-depth overview of the proposed project, as well as any responses to questions and concerns presented by meeting attendees. If approved by the planning board, I also hope that this will not become yet another cheap development that is void of character. Last thing the area needs is another Walmart, Michael's or Dollar Tree.

ReplyYep. Little Rhode Island achieved what Congress cannot. They actually got something done!
Kudos to the Rhode Island Senate Republican Caucus. It became the first legislative caucus in the nation of either party to unanimously support marriage equality. And shame on the 11 Democrats (including Senator Felag) and 1 Independent, who voted against my civil right.

On the article Tiverton School Budget Funds Full-Time Resource Officer

ReplyMinimal increase to budget and even less of an increase to taxpayers. Funding the gap left by the federal government for important mandated programs can be absorbed. And Tiverton is in line with other districts by adding a resource officer, which will improve safety for Tiverton's students, teachers and schools. Reasonable and forward-thinking.
