Cicilline, Langevin, Whitehouse win Re-Election

Rhode Island voters favor Democrats in election.

It was a good night for Democrats Tuesday in Rhode Island. In Rhode Island’s 1st Congressional District David Cicilline was able to win a second term against a tough race fought against Republican Brendan Doherty. The former head of the Rhode Island State Police strongly criticized Cicilline during the course of the campaign over his final leadership of the city of Providence when he was mayor for eight before heading to Washington two years ago. In the 2nd Congressional District James Langevin was able to win a seventh term over Republican Michael Riley. Riley reportedly lent his campaign more than $600,000. Langevin cited as accomplishments his work to maintain submarine production at Electric Boat and efforts to strengthen job training …

Rhode Island's Democratic and Republican political influencers take part in our final survey before election day.

In the race for President of the United States, influential Rhode Island political insiders have weighed in regarding who has run the better "ground game" in Rhode Island leading up to the election. According to our results, Democratic influencers felt Obama has run a better ground campaign by a wide margin while a majority of Republican influencers surveyed said the ground campaign up to this point has been even. Patch surveyed 53 Republicans and 51 Democrats, asking regardless of their partisan preference, which presidential campaign do you think has run the better "ground game" campaign during the general election in Rhode Island? Among those who responded, 55.6% of Democrats said Barack Obama has run the better ground campaign by a …

Letter to the Editor

Letter: Why We Need to Restore Fiscal Responsibility

Congressman David Cicilline talks below about fiscal responsibility on the national level.

Some political observers have suggested that Congressman Paul Ryan (R-WI) and the House Republican caucus demonstrated courage with their most recent budget proposal. I disagree. There is no doubt that we need to restore fiscal responsibility in Washington, D.C. – on this point, nearly all of my Republican and Democratic colleagues agree.  We enacted cuts and savings that amount to $900 billion over ten years and agreed to at least $1.2 trillion more over nine years beginning in 2013.  Where we disagree is on whether cuts in federal spending need to come at the expense of important investments in our economic growth. The House Republican budget proposal would devastate funding for the programs necessary to get our state through the current…

With Help, Tiverton Family Secures Disability Insurance Before Christmas

The Thibault's Christmas and overdue bill payments were saved once Congressman David Cicilline's office helped them receive their much-needed disability claim.

When Tiverton resident Robert Thibault's daughter was born, he took a year off from his computer technician job at Gateway in Cranston and began looking locally for house call jobs he could do. Then, when his hips started to go in 2002, it got tougher and tougher to do repairs, like getting on the floor to plug and install computer parts. Soon after, Robert, 50, was diagnosed with degenerative arthritis in both his hips and lower spine. As a result, he’s been out of work entirely since February of this year. His wife Deborah, 51, worked at Travelers Insurance for 25 years but was let go in 2006 for poor performance, not knowing at the time she had multiple sclerosis. After some serious outreach to elected officials, it wasn’t until this …

“We have been able to assist a number of constituents in this situation with re-applying for Social Security benefits, a process which can be complex and difficult to get through.” It is great to see people working together in a community in order to make positive change. Cicilline and his staff truly are miracle workers, selflessly helping others in need. If you or a loved one is disabled, and …   more ›
