Stafford Pond Reservoir Regulations Top Tiverton Council Agenda

The Tiverton Town Council will consider amendments to town ordinances regulating recreational activities on Stafford Pond at its meeting on Monday, April 22.

The Tiverton Town Council is asking residents to weigh in on the town's efforts to protect Stafford Pond - a public drinking water resource. Tiverton is considering adopting stricter regulations for recreational uses of Stafford Pond, and limiting the scope of of the state Department of Environmental Management (DEM)-sponsored fishing tournaments. On Monday the Town Council will conduct a public hearing at 7 p.m. at the Town Hall - the meeting is an opporutinty for residents to weigh in on proposed amendments to Chapter 15 of Tiverton's ordinance dealing with drinking water. The amendments would redefine permitting process for tournaments held on town reservoirs like Stafford Pond. Under the new ordinance, a tournament, which is defined as…

"Under the new ordinance, a tournament, which is defined as more than six boats, would now require a town permit - for a fee of $50 - from the town clerk to allow for the use of the Tiverton boat ramp." The boat ramp and the parking area are owned by the state and not the town. Although I understand the concern for the power boats on the pond, not all of them are launched from the state ramp.   more ›

Town, School To Split Cost To Drain Pocasset Puddle

The town and school are matching funds to solve a drainage problem at Pocasset Elementary School.

The town and school department agreed to split the estimated $14,250 price tag to fix the drainage problem at Pocasset Elementary School. After residents complained of a 100-foot wide, 18-inch deep puddle at the school at the March 25 Town Council meeting, the Tiverton council voted on Monday to 50 percent fund the project. Prior to draining the puddle that sits in southeast corner of the parking lot and driveway, Department of Public Works Director Stephen Berlucchi said the town would need to ensure the ground underneath the puddle is not rock ledge. "It's not brain surgery, it's a puddle," said Berlucchi. "There are a few ways of getting rid of it, but we have to really know what's under the ground before we can go forward with it." …

Pocasset School: In Deep Water

Tiverton, the school department and local residents are working together to find a solution for a potentially hazardous water drainage issue at the Pocasset Elementary School.

After it rains the parking lot behind the Pocasset School on Tiverton's north end more resembles a swimming pool than a place to park a car and the town will have to spend tens of thousands to correct the problem. Water runoff collects in the southeast corner of the lot and rests against the school's foundation, covering about 100 feet of pavement with standing water up to 18 inches deep. Resident Jim O'Dell worried the poor drainage would undermine the paved parking lot, foundation and - at the very least - pose a safety hazard to students. "When I saw it, the last rain was four days earlier," said O'Dell as he described the volume of standing water on the parking lot. "There is evidence on the foundation of the school that water has sat …

With the water collecting there and not draining properly, wouldn't this lead to a mosquito breeding ground come summertime? That would not be pleasant for people going to the playground or ball field.   more ›

Tiverton Town Council Dismisses Complaint Against Clerk

The Tiverton Town Council determined its town clerk acted appropriately when dealing with recent charter violation complaints.

The Tiverton Town Council upheld the town clerk's actions in recent charter violation complaint during its meeting on Monday. In a hearing that lasted for nearly four hours, resident Justin Katz presented a case to the Charter Monitoring and Complaint Review Board - which is composed solely of Town Council members. Katz accused Town Clerk Nancy Mello of violating the town's charter in her handling of an October complaint that accused a School Department employee of displaying political paraphernalia on school property. In his complaint Katz claimed that Mello violated the town's charter because - in his opinion - she didn't have the authority to either dismiss or recommend a hearing to the Town Council for that original complaint. Mello …

Tiverton Town Council Hearing On Charter Complaint Against Town Clerk Monday

The Tiverton Town Council will hear testimony from resident Justin Katz against the handling of a recent charter complaint by the town clerk during tonight's meeting.

The Tiverton Town Council will hear testimony tonight on whether the town clerk violated the town's charter when ruling on a separate October charter violation complaint. Resident and former School Committee candidate Justin Katz accused Town Clerk Nancy Mello of violating Sec. 1211(a) of the town's charter when she dismissed a complaint in October that accused a Tiverton School Department employee of displaying political messages on her desk in the Fort Barton Elementary School's main office. After conferring with the town's solicitor, Andrew Teitz, Mello investigated the complaint in accordance with her charge within of the town charter. Ultimately, she recommended the council take no action on the complaint, deciding that the complaint …

Tiverton Town Council To Hold Special Meeting Today

The Tiverton Town Council will hold a special meeting today at 9:30 a.m. at the Town Hall.

The Tiverton Town Council will hold a special meeting today at 9:30 a.m. at the Town Hall for discussion - and a possible vote on the budget. Town Councilors are trying to shave down the proposed 2013-14 budget. A budget presented at the Feb. 25 meeting showed a 3.9 percent increase over the current year, but the Town Council expressed uniform interest in keeping next year's budget at no more than a 3 percent increase. "There are a lot of things in here that we want, would like to have and probably absolutely need to have, but whether or not we can afford them and be fair to taxpayers in this town is another thing," said council President Edward A. Roderick, adding that he would be more comfortable with nothing over a 2.5 percent increase…
