Over the past couple of weeks, several sources — both local and national — have issued their rankings of high schools in Rhode Island. And while it may be an accomplishment to be named the state's top high school by one group, parents and students may be left scratching their heads when they read other results. Take Tiverton High School, for example. GoLocalProv.com named Tiverton High School as No. 18 out of 49 in Rhode Island — and Newsweek did not list the school in its ranking. Tiverton High School is ranked #18 out of 49 schools, according to a new report released Tuesday.
Tiverton High School was ranked #18 out of 49 schools, dropping two points from last year, in a new GoLocalProv report released Tuesday. GoLocal said it employs a formula developed at Babson College to assess and weight each school's latest NECAP and SAT scores, plus per-pupil funding, student-teacher ratios, and graduation rates. Of the 49 Rhode Island schools measured, Tiverton High School made the list of top 20. The Tiverton High School’s bands returned from Hamilton, Bermuda
where they competed in their annual national adjudication and competition via Royal Caribbean Cruise

Tiverton High School’s musicians return from Hamilton, Bermudawhere they competed in their annual national adjudication and competition via Royal Caribbean CruiseLine’s “Explorer of the Seas” vessel. This national music festival, hosted by Cruise Festivals, featured four school districts and nine different high school level ensembles. The ensembles performed before panels of nationally acclaimed, university level adjudicators and clinicians. The marching, concert and jazz bands, all under the direction of Mike Alves, were awarded to phonors in each of their respective divisions with all receiving ratings of Superior in the Class “A” high school performance category. Four local comedians of Portuguese descent will perform on Thursday for Tiverton High School Students.
Tiverton High School students will get a chance to see the funnier side of growing of Portuguese on Thursday when the comedy troupe The Portuguese Kids performs at the school. Four comedians from southeastern Massachusetts take ethnic comedy to new heights with live performances across the country. Utilizing sketch comedy, music and improv, Derrick DeMelo, Jason Casimiro, Brian Martins and Al Sardinha - better known as the Portuguese Kids - poke fun at their ethnic heritage using comedy and entertainment to build camaraderie and culture in Portuguese-American and Portuguese-Canadian communities. The Tiverton School Committee will discuss its budget for the 2013-14 fiscal year at its meeting tonight.
The Tiverton School Committee will meet tonight to discuss its 2013-14 budget. The School Committee will meet tonight to discuss for a final time its budget before forwarding its recommendations to the town's Budget Committee. "Cost savings, shared services, the health trust, we have many different ways of trying to save money all the time, which we will be talking about during our meeting on Tuesday before we send our meeting to the Budget Committee," said Sally A. Seven THS students met with Rhode Island lawmakers on Feb. 26 to discuss their efforts to discourage marijuana usage among local teens.
Seven Tiverton High School students took to the halls of the Rhode Island State House last week to show lawmakers their in-school efforts to discourage marijuana use amongst their peers. On Feb. 26 the students appeared at a legislative briefing sponsored by the Ocean State Prevention Alliance to unveil their campaign against marijuana, titled Un-Marketing Weed. Launched last fall, it is an extracurricular community service and learning program created by student volunteers who were challenged to develop the campaign around the issue of “risk of harm,” a standard predictor for youth marijuana use. The school has been under "lockdown" status since noon.
Administrators locked down Tiverton High School at noon on Friday and reportedly conducted searches of students and lockers after a single bullet was found in the boys bathroom. The school was searched by officers and Sakonnet Times reported and a firearm-sniffing dog from the Fall River Police Department, reported Eastbayri.com. Students were locked down until about 2:30 p.m. when they were discharged safely. An automated phone message informed parents of the lockdown situation just after noon on Friday and during the lock down, no one was allowed in or out of the building. I don't hold much faith in the golocal report. How can Middletown rate 12th with a graduation rate of 73.8% and the cost per child is more than Tiverton. Seems odd to me.   more ›
