Police are investigating an incident that took place today at 82 Middle Ave. in Tiverton and caused the mandatory evacuation of more than a dozen homes on Monday.
Residents are back home after police ordered the evacuation of more than a dozen homes near Middle Avenue this morning. While officials are not releasing any information on the cause of the evacuation, they indicated the need for residents to vacate the area was not related to threats from Hurricane Sandy. "There was an incident on Middle Avenue and there is an ongoing investigation into that right now," said Chief Thomas Blakey of the Tiverton Police Department in an interview today. "I won't be able to speak about the event itself until that is concluded." About 12 to 15 homes between Middle and South avenues between Highland Road and West Avenue were evacuated for about two and a half hours between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Monday. …

A Portsmouth resident spotted these dolphins swimming in Narragansett Bay on Thursday morning.
Portsmouth resident Kenny Raposa captured these photos of dolphins swimming this morning in Narragansett Bay. Raposa says he was in his boat on his way to work on Prudence Island when he came upon a pod of common dolphins. The dolphins were between Dyer and Prudence Islands at 8 a.m. At one point, Raposa says the dolphins swam right under the boat. A pod of dolphins was also spotted recently in Newport. After gaining hundreds of signatures in opposition to the proposed Sakonnet River Bridge tolls, a Tiverton and Portsmouth property owner is planning a rally at Clements' Marketplace in Portsmouth on Friday.
Portsmouth resident Jeanne Smith is doing her part to fight the proposed tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge. After circulating dozens of petitions at local businesses throughout Newport County and gaining hundreds of signatures, Smith will hold a rally on Friday in Portsmouth that she said will give visibility to those opposing the tolls. Smith, a former Tiverton resident, now lives in the north end of Portsmouth, but still owns property in Tiverton and crosses either the Sakonnet or Newport bridges daily. The rally is slated to be held during the Friday, Aug. 10 taping of the WPRO's Buddy Cianci Show at Clements' Marketplace in Portsmouth from 3-6 p.m. Smith said demonstrators should grab their signs and gather in the parking lot.
