Stop & Shop Prepares for Potential Labor Strike, Hires Replacement Workers

The company is holding discussions with labor representatives as the deadline for a three-year contract nears on Feb. 23.

Representatives of the Stop & Shop grocery store chain are looking to hire temporary replacement workers as it prepares for a potential labor strike, according to a report in theBoston Herald Friday.  The Quincy-based company is currently holding contract discussions with United Food and Commercial Workers Union locals who represent more than 40,000 Stop & Shop employees in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island, according to the Herald. The three-year contract will expire on Saturday, Feb. 23.  While discussions continue, the company is running eight hiring sites from Mansfield to Quincy to Woburn. Stop & Shop Supermarkets announced it removed from sale Daniella mangos purchased between July 12 and Aug. 24 due to possible salmonella contamination.

  Stop & Shop Supermarkets announced it removed from sale Daniella mangos due to possible salmonella contamination. Daniella mangos purchased between July 12 and August 24, 2012 are included in this recall. Stop & Shop is aware of illnesses reported in Canada and associated with this recall. Customers who have purchased the product should discard any unused portions and bring their receipt to Stop & Shop for a full refund. Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. Stop & Shop Recalls Bean Salad Over Listeria Concern

The Rhode Island Department of Health issued a warning to consumers Tuesday afternoon.

The Rhode Island Department of Health Tuesday afternoon issued a warning to consumers that they should not eat Calico Bean Salad purchased from the salad bar at Stop & Shop Supermarkets between July 18 and July 26, 2012. Stop & Shop has voluntarily recalled the product, following a recall by Costa Fruit & Produce, because it may potentially be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Consumers who purchased Calico Bean Salad from Stop & Shop during this time period should discard any unused product and bring their purchase receipt to the Stop & Shop store from which the product was purchased for a full refund. Food Pantry Stocks $1,000 in Donations From Tiverton Police Department [VIDEO]

The need from local families using the East Bay Community Action Program's food pantry is increasing during the holiday season.

Fresh and non-perishable food filled the pantry inside the East Bay Community Program (EBCAP) in Tiverton on Tuesday morning, thanks to a donation from the Tiverton Police Department and Stop & Shop. Sgt. James Costa said they gave $1,000 worth of food, in cooperation with Stop & Shop, to the program. He said the annual donation comes from the International Brotherhood of Police Officers Union Local 406, and this year they had a little extra to dole out for Thanksgiving in addition to their Christmas donation. "We take donations all the time," he said. "Thanks to the support of businesses and residents in town, we were able to make additional donations."
