Brazil Nightclub Fire, Did the World Not Learn from Rhode Island's Tragedy?

The fire in Brazil that killed hundreds Sunday is a painful reminder of the 2003 Rhode Island nightclub fire.

Today Rhode Island's eyes are on the tragedy of the Brazil nightclub fire, which is a painful experience of deja-vu for the state. A fire tore through a Kiss nightclub in Brazil Sunday morning, that has killed more than 200 people and left 120 injured, reports CNN.  The Brazil nightclub was allegedly packed with more than 2,000 people, double its capacity. The story has startling similarities to 2003, when the band Great White took the stage at The Station nightclub in West Warwick.  There are reports that the Brazil nightclub's insulation foam ignited the fire. I really don't think people in Brazil heard about "The Station Fire" 10 years ago. I think it's foolish to believe, as tragic as it was, that small event caught the world's attention at all.   more ›

Station Fire Property Owner Donates Land for Memorial

Property transfer papers were filed at West Warwick Town Hall on Friday.

  According to the Associated Press, West Warwick property owner Ray Villanova has agreed to donate the site of The Station nightclub for use as a permanent memorial to the 100 people killed in the Feb. 2003 blaze. Villanova's lawyer, Dan McKiernan filed papers at West Warwick Town Hall on Friday morning transferring the land to the Station Fire Memorial Foundation. The decision brings closure to a long-standing effort to secure the site of the tragedy by families of those killed. The one condition of the transfer is that a suitable memorial be maintained at the site in perpetuity. What Renee Said! But this part causes me concern- "Last week, Gov. Lincoln Chafee and House Speaker Gordon Fox said they were looking into the legalities of seizing the land by eminent domain." Waiting for the owner to do something was INSULTING/HURTFUL to the deceased/injured survivors and their loved ones and it stank! BUT to TAKE the his land over it??   more ›
