Tiverton STOP, a citizens' action committee working to stop tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge, is planning a protest at Friday's Sakonnet River Bridge opening ceremony.
Tiverton STOP is looking to shift the focus to the growing momentum behind East Bay's anti-toll movement at Friday morning's opening ceremony for the new Sakonnet River Bridge. The state Department of Transportation's RSVP-only opening ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. on the bridge deck of the old Sakonnet River Bridge on Friday. Both DOT Director Michael P. Lewis and Gov. Lincoln Chafee will attend. "We would like to ask all our members, if they are available, to please attend the ceremony," said Joy Gilkeson, one of Tiverton STOP's organizaers, in an email on Tuesday. Tiverton STOP is soliciting letters from East Bay residents who would be affected by a toll on the Sakonnet River Bridge. At the group's Thursday night launch meeting at the Tiverton Town Hall, STOP organizers said they aim to send 5,000 to 6,000 personal letters to the governor and local legislators documenting the impact a toll would have on individual citizens, families and small businesses. More than four dozen residents, legislators and town officials representing all sides of the political spectrum turned out for the Tiverton STOP launch meeting on Thursday night. Political affiliations aside, Tiverton residents can agree on one thing: stop tolling on the Sakonnet River Bridge. "This is a nonpartisan effort," said Jay Lambert, Town Council president. Tiverton residents are organizing against the tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge. In a grassroots approach, citizens will gather for the Tiverton STOP - otherwise known as the Tiverton Sakonnet Toll Opposition Platform - launch meeting on Thursday, Sept. 27 to discuss strategies to fight the imposition of tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge.
