Do You Know Where Bats Are Living in RI?

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management is asking property owners to assist with surveys for summer bat colonies.

The following is a press release issued by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management: The Department of Environmental Management (DEM) is seeking information from the public about locations where summer colonies of bats may be located. Wildlife biologists in DEM’s Division of Fish and Wildlife would like to hear from property owners and others who know of a barn or other structure that has bats so they can monitor and conduct exit counts at these bat roosting sites. Technical assistance is available for interested property owners. Several bat species in the eastern United States and Canada are experiencing dramatic population declines due to disease and other issues. The Little Brown Bat (Myotis lucifugus), once one of the …

With out the joke . If you shine a spot light up in the air at night it attracts bugs . 75 watt is more than enough. Bugs attract Bats. If you shine the light every night it will provide a source of food to attract them. This will increase the likely hood of them occupying your house. I love watching them dive in to the light to snatch the bugs   more ›

DEM to Designate Tiverton Parcel For Open Space, Hunting

Protecting more habitats of the Great Swamp Watershed is a focal point of last month's $643,000 land deal between the Tiverton Rod & Gun Club and the state.

The Tiverton Rod & Gun Club sold 121 acres of land near Lake Road and Weetamoo Woods last month to the state for future open space, recreation and conservation use, already adding to the town's list of protected wildlife parcels. "Our parcel is a part of the Great Swamp Watershed," said John Means, president of the Rod & Gun Club, in an interview last week about the approximate $643,000 transaction. "We felt it was in the best interest to turn to the parcel over to DEM as a managed wildlife area." Not only will the land be available for hunters, but it will also provide protection to local habitats and cater to hikers. Means said they were first approached by The Nature Conservancy about putting the land into open space. Cathy Sparks, …

DEM Denies Little Compton Grant to Fix Muddy Fields

Application stated to be inconsistent to town's comprehensive plan.

After months of waiting, the state denied Little Compton its $250,000 grant application to fix its outdated recreation fields. Patrick McHugh, chairman of the Recreation, Conservation and Open Space Commission, reported Wednesday that he was notified by the chief the Division of Planning and Development from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management that their application was denied due to inconsistancies between the application and Little Compton's comprehensive plan. He communicated this information in an email sent to committee members and parents. "I would like to thank every person on this committee for the many hours spent putting this grant application together," he wrote. "This application was outstanding. It is a …

Sen. DiPalma Seeks to Tighten DEM Compost Permitting Rules

The situation stems from the ongoing dispute between Crandall Road neighbors and a local landscaping business, Tiger Tree Co.

State Sen. Louis DiPalma (D-Middletown, Little Compton, Newport, Tiverton) introduced a bill related to timely manner of how the Department of Environmental Management (DEM) issues compost facility permits in an properly zoned area. It will be heard later today in the Senate Committee on Environment and Agriculture in Room 212 of the State House. Reached late Tuesday night, DiPalma said the issue stems from how the DEM authorized a composting permit last May for James Pelletier of Tiger Tree Co., a landscaping company located on Crandall Road near Adamsville. Pelletier's been in a tense dispute with his Crandall Road neighbors since 2005 over his business operation and what his land is zoned for. "It's not a great situation to put it that …

State Bans Felt-Soled Foot Gear Only in Fresh Waters

The Tiverton Rod and Gun Club hosts one of two meetings next month on the 2012-13 fishing and hunting regulations.

The following press release is issued from the Department of Environmental Management: The Department of Environmental Management (DEM) has filed a technical revision to the 2012-2013 Freshwater Fishing Regulations related to the use of felt-soled foot gear in state waters. DEM’s Division of Fish and Wildlife has modified the regulation prohibiting the use of foot gear with external felt soles so that it applies only to the fresh waters of the state. The technical revision becomes effective immediately. The revision was made once it became apparent that an all-waters ban on the use of felt-soled foot gear was not intended by the department in adopting this regulation.  “DEM supports regulations that add a strong measure of prevention to …

Tiverton Receives Harbor Patrol Boat From State

The DEM donated it during the summertime and went into service recently.

Tiverton's habormaster repaired and converted a relatively new patrol boat into full service in September. It's docked at Standish Boat Yard with a "Tiverton Harbor Patrol" logo painting on the hull. It is the second donated boat to the fleet this year. Harbormaster David Vannier said the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management donated a 26-foot 1997 Mako Patrol boat to the town in June to replace the "tired" 24-foot 1986 Romarine. Vannier said the Mako has two 2003 Yamaha 225-horsepower four-stroke engines and added they have less than 550 hours of combined use. The Romarine has a single 200-horsepower Yamaha engine with 1,600 hours of use. Vannier said he made minor repairs to Marine 2, the new boat, such as fixing a trim/…

Tiverton Schools Must Pay For New Sewer System

The district received a Notice of Violation about pollutants entering a nearby brook and have to pay for a new wastewater treatment system.

Upgrading the Tiverton School District’s sewage treatment facility is coming at a tough time while it is currently in dispute with the town over money, the School Committee learned Tuesday night. Douglas Fiore, director of finance and administration, said they have been working with the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management since last winter on installing a new wastewater treatment system, which dates back to when the high school opened in 1976. It services the high school, middle school and Ranger School. The district needs to respond to a DEM engineer’s questions by early December to determine where to go next, and aim to have construction started by the spring. If it gets delayed, Tiverton could be handed stiff penalties …

Access to War Redoubt to Improve Through Tiverton Land Trust Property Purchase

They are acquiring 16 acres on Highland Road adjacent to the Fort Barton Redoubt, with help from a grant recently awarded by the Department of Environmental Management.

The Tiverton Land Trust recently announced entering into an agreement to purchase 16 acres on Highland Road, directly adjacent to the Fort Barton Revolutionary War Redoubt and Fort Barton Woods. The land trust is acquiring the property from the family of the late Virginia Clark, a long-time resident of Tiverton. Additionally, Gov. Lincoln Chafee and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) awarded the Land Trust $187,500 in open space matching grants earlier this month to help acquire the property. “The land trust's purchase of this important property enhances an incredible historical legacy for the town of Tiverton,” said Constance Lima, president of the trust, in a press release. State Awards Land Grants to Tiverton Land Trust and Open Space Commission

The announcement was earlier this week, and will preserve about 40 acres of land in town.

Tiverton received approximately $270,000 from the Department of Environmental Management this week in open space matching grants. The state awarded the Tiverton Land Trust $187,500 to acquire the 16-acre Clark parcel, which is considered significant due to its location within the state Natural Heritage Program’s Sin and Flesh Brook Habitat Area. According to DEM, this area contains coastal oak-holly forests and vernal pools, and future plans include the development of a new entrance and parking area to the abutting Fort Barton Revolutionary War historic redoubt.  The Tiverton Open Space Commission received $81,250 to acquire the 23-acre Baier property, a piece of land contained within Tiverton’s Pocasset lands regional forest, an area …
