Local legislators said they would continue efforts to repeal tolling on the Sakonnet River Bridge despite a RITBA decision establishing a toll rate structure today.
East Bay legislators said they are not giving up on efforts to block tolling on the Sakonnet River Bridge following Wednesday's decision by the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority to establish toll rates. Lawmakers and residents from East Bay communities have argued that a toll on the Sakonnet River Bridge could discourage tourists and have significant impacts on the the local economy. "They are using the Sakonnet River Bridge as a cash cow for more than $20 million to be sucked out of our economy in the East Bay to support the [Newport] Pell and Mt. Hope bridges," said Rep. John G. Edwards (D-Dist. 70 Portsmouth, Tiverton) in response to the the RITBA decision to move forward and establish a tolling rate on the Sakonnet River …

RIPTA will hold a public meeting on March 18 at 7 p.m. at the Town Hall to hear feedback on restoring services to Tiverton.
The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) is considering reinstating transit services to Tiverton and is asking the public to weigh in on how to effectively serve the community. A public meeting will be held on Monday, March 18 from 7 - 8:30 p.m. at the Tiverton Town Hall, 343 Highland Road to discuss transit options for Tiverton and Little Compton. Rep. Edwards’ legislation (2012-H 5207) would create the Joint Committee of the Repealer. What do you think about this legislation?
Rep. John G. Edwards (D – Dist. 70, Portsmouth, Tiverton) wants to change out-of-date laws and regulations, especially ones that may inhibit business growth. “It’s time we have a committee that sits down, reads through some of these older statutes and makes recommendations to repeal rules that hold no relevance in 2013,” Rep. Edwards said. “The joint committee would also target ‘business-unfriendly’ wording and redundant language in our books. We’re supposed to be doing everything we can to encourage economic growth. "Well, it’s the little things that count sometimes and I think this is something that just needs to be done. There are a lot of arbitrary statutes and cumbersome regulations that need to go.” Rep. Edwards’ legislation (2012-H …

Tiverton's Rep. John G. Edwards and Rep. Dennis M. Canario support a bill submitted by Cranston State Rep. Arthur Handy to legalize gay marriage. After 10 years submitting the same bill, this year could be the year it finally gets to a floor vote.
For 10 years, Cranston Rep. Arthur Handy has introduced the same bill every legislative session that would allow same-sex couple to marry. Despite resubmitting the bill annually, it has never before seen the a floor vote. This year that could all change, as House Speaker Gordon Fox pledged to put a vote to the floor by the end of the month. The legislation has broad support, with 42 members of the House, including Rep. John G. Edwards (D-Dist. 70) and Rep. Dennis M. Canario (D.Dist. 71), signing on as sponsors and 11 members of the Senate. “We are long overdue. Rhode Island, the colony founded on the principle of personal liberty, is now the only New England state that doesn’t allow same-gender couples equal marriage. Rhode Islanders …
