Despite opposition from local residents, the Department of Transportation (DOT) is taking a step forward in acquiring tolls for the new Sakonnet River Bridge.
The Department of Transportation (DOT) has taken a step towards collecting tolls on the new Sakonnet River Bridge, reports The Newport Daily News on Tuesday. According to The Newport Daily News' Facebook page, the DOT submitted its application to the Federal Highway Administration to place tolls on the bridge, which spans Portsmouth and Tiverton. The move comes nearly two weeks after the Tiverton STOP group and others submitted more than 30,000 signatures from residents opposing the tolls. Tolls could be in place as early as this summer, DOT Director Michael Lewis said previously. The Little Compton Town Council approved an agreement with the DOT last week that will reimburse the town for costs incurred by uniformed officers positioned at state roadway construction projects.
In a meeting that lasted less than 10 minutes last week, the Little Compton Town Council approved an agreement for reimbursement of the costs of police details with the state Department of Transportation. In accordance with federal law, the agreement allows the town to bill the DOT for costs incurred from the use of uniformed Little Compton Police officers on federal-aid highway projects. It requires that the DOT pay the same rates as negotiated in the contract with the local police union. “We are collecting something that offsets the [Federal Insurance Contributions Act tax] and other charges associated with this overtime,” said Robert L. A forum at the Burnside Building tonight at 7 addresses concerns over proposed fees for the Mount Hope and Sakonnet River bridges.
Since 1998, Rhode Islaners — especially those on the East Bay — have had the option to get onto Aquidneck Island without paying the tolls the Newport Bridge charges. The free ride could soon be coming to an end and crossing onto the island may soon cost drivers money regardless of the route they take. The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority hopes so. The authority — which already approved raising rates on the Newport Pell Bridge — has proposed adding fees to the Mount Hope and Sakonnet River bridges. The tolls would range from 52 cents to $3.25 each way. The Newport bridge is scheduled to increase from $4 to $5 for cash-paying drivers. Those using an E-Z pass pay less than $1. The primary seat belt law allows officers to fine motorists $85 for not buckling up at any time of the day.
Rhode Island police have a message for motorists: click your seat belt or face a $85 fine. Local law enforcement throughout the state will start heavily enforcing nighttime seat belt use. Violators will be fined $85 for each person in the vehicle who is not wearing a belt. Tiverton and Little Compton police departments will be teaming up with State Police starting this weekend on enforcing the new initiative. Tiverton Police Lt. Patrick Jones said they will be out at 7 p.m. Friday night enforcing nighttime seat belt use. Little Compton Police Chief Sidney Wordell said, like last year, they will be participating in the nighttime "ramp up" effort going into the spring.
