Although there have been plenty of discussions about gun control, what about the topic of taking a closer look at mental health issues?
In the wake of the tragedy that took the lives of 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., a blogger from across the country was arguably the first to break through the noise and galvanize a debate around mental health. Liza Long’s blog post about raising a mentally ill child, “I Am Adam Lanza’s Mother,” talks about her experiences raising her 13-year-old son, whom she describes as a gifted but unpredictable child who has threatened to kill her and himself. As she put it, “I love my son. But he terrifies me." Her blog post quickly went viral, got picked up by the The Huffington Post and others, earned a million likes on Facebook, and led to Long's appearance on CNN to talk about the way mental illness…

Governor Lincoln Chafee has declared Friday, December 21, 2012 – the one-week anniversary of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT – a "Day of Mourning" in the State of Rhode Island. To honor the memory of the 26 victims who lost their lives in the shootings, the governor also called for a statewide moment of silence at 9:30 a.m. on that day and has asked that buildings, which have the ability, ring bells 26 times during that moment in honor of each life that was taken. "The past week has been one of great pain for the community of Newtown, the State of Connecticut, and our country as a whole," Governor Chafee said. "Each day, we see reports of funeral services for children taken from their families too soon …
The company-wide blackout is to honor the memory of those killed last Friday in Connecticut.
This morning at 9:30, Patch will join with AOL in a company-wide blackout as "moment of silence" to honor the victims of the elementary school shooting in Newtown, CT, last week. According to Techcrunch, "The campaign was inspired by a call for a moment of silence by Connecticut’s Governor, and spearheaded by Causes and SV Angel. It follows a coalition of tech leaders calling for more gun control." Other companies likely taking part in the "Web Moment of Silence" include Adobe, Duke University, Salesforce and WillCall. There's been a lot of controversy about this woman. In her blog she says that she doesn't know what's wrong with him but speculates he may be Autistic. Why bring Autism into this if you don't even know for sure?
