The Tiverton Land Trust recently announced entering into an agreement to purchase 16 acres on Highland Road, directly adjacent to the Fort Barton Revolutionary War Redoubt and Fort Barton Woods. The land trust is acquiring the property from the family of the late Virginia Clark, a long-time resident of Tiverton. Additionally, Gov. Lincoln Chafee and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) awarded the Land Trust $187,500 in open space matching grants earlier this month to help acquire the property. “The land trust's purchase of this important property enhances an incredible historical legacy for the town of Tiverton,” said Constance Lima, president of the trust, in a press release. On Jan. 24, sorting potatoes was the order of the day at Ferolbink Farms in Tiverton.
Winter seems like a quiet time for farmers, but there is more going on than you would think. At Ferolbink Farms in Tiverton on Monday, Jan. 24, Norwis potatoes were being washed, sorted and loaded on to an Ocean State Potato truck. “We do this two or three times a week,” said the farm’s owner, Jason “Pete” Peckham. First the potatoes were scooped up by machine from a concrete storage bay and loaded into a hopper. From there, they were washed, sorted and transported by a series of conveyor belts to the back of a tractor trailer truck.
