Local Officers Ask Bikers to Ride for the Fallen

A motorcycle ride through Portsmouth will help raise money for fallen police officers. Civilians and officers are encouraged to participate in the event on Sept. 9.

On Sept. 9, for the second year in a row, two Aquidneck Island police officers will bring a national event to a local level.   Every May, thousands of police officers sweat through the 300-mile, four day, Police Unity Tour, which is a bicycle ride from Florham Park, N.J. to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.   The event honors police officers who fell in the line of duty. Although that ride is only open to police officers, Lt. Mike Faria of the Middletown Police Department and Officer Joe Carroll of Newport, have organized a motorcycle ride that joins civilians and officers together, to raise awareness and money for the cause right here in Rhode Island. “Everyone is welcome,” said Faria. Senator Whitehouse's Son Arrested on DUI Charge

The following arrest was reported by the Middletown Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Alexander Whitehouse of Newport, the 19-year-old son of U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, was arrested early this morning on charges of driving under the influence (DUI).  His passenger, 18-year-old Robert Bauer of Portsmouth, was also arrested for alleged possession of marijuana. Police said around 1:25 a.m., a witness called the Middletown Police to report a car that was operating in an erratic manner at the intersection of Green End Avenue and Aquidneck Avenue in Middletown.  The witness said the passenger was holding a beer bottle and both individuals in the car appeared to be intoxicated. Portsmouth Man Dies After Being Swept Into Ocean

A Portsmouth man died after he was pulled out of the water Wednesday morning near the Sachuest Point Wildlife Refuge in Middletown.

Gary Mathias, 48, of Portsmouth, died Wednesday after he was swept into the ocean by a wave near the Sachuest Point Wildlife Refuge, Middletown police said.  Police responded just after 4 a.m. to the national refuge for a report of a fisherman being swept into the ocean.  Sgt. Mark Minnella arrived first and located the victim floating in the surf. Sgt Minnella entered  the water with a life line attached, but the surf was to rough to allow him to reach the victim, police said.  Mathias' body was later found floating in the surf and was unresponsive. The victim was brought to the Third Beach Boat ramp, where Newport Rescue personnel began CPR. Mathias was then transported to Newport Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.  The …

Tiverton Man Arrested in Middletown on Heroin Charges

A Tiverton man is facing charges for heroin possession and a "strong-arm" robbery after being picked up on an arrest warrant in Middletown last week. last week picked up on an arrest warrant in Middletown last week is facing various charges, including being a fugitive from justice, possession of heroin and a "strong-arm" robbery charge in Fall River. Erik R. Gravel, 27, of 100 Fern Way, Tiverton, was arrested by Tiverton police at 10 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3. He was charged with possession of heroin and being a fugitive from justice. According to Tiverton Lt. Patrick Jones, Middletown Police initially picked up Gravel that night at 6:30 p.m. and then contacted Tiverton.
