Superior Court Judge Declares Joel Beaulieu Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity

Judge Melanie Thunberg finds Joel Beaulieu not guilty by reason of insanity in the Sept. 4, 2010, stabbing death of his father and assault of his mother.

Rhode Island Superior Court announced today that Justice Melanie W. Thunberg has found Joel Beaulieu not guilty by reason of insanity in the Sept. 4, 2010, stabbing death of his father and assault of his mother. The defense stipulated to the facts that in the late evening hours of Sept. 4, 2010, Joel Beaulieu stabbed his mother and father. Conrad Beaulieu died as a result of the injuries and Diane Beaulieu suffered serious injuries. The defense expert witness, Dr. Barry Wall, testified that Beaulieu suffers from schizoaffective disorder, and as such, was not capable of appreciating the wrongfulness of his conduct or to conform his conduct to the requirements of the law at the time he committed the crime. Second Witness Testifies on Beaulieu's Mental Instability During Parents' Stabbings

Judge Melanie Thunberg will issue a decision on or before Dec. 16.

In the second day of Joel Beaulieu's murder trial in Newport Superior Court, a defense witness concurred that Joel Beaulieu's severe mental illness suprecedes his criminalresponsibility in the alleged murder of his father, Conrad, during Labor Day weekend in 2010. Judge Melanie Thunberg said she will review all the information in the case and issue a decision on or before Dec. 16. The trial is complete until that time. "I think all evidence should point in the right direction," said Beaulieu's attorney, Jeffrey Pine, when delivering his final statements. He reiterated that Beaulieu should be found not guilty by reason of insanity. "It was a tragedy with no rational basis to it. He's someone who needs a great deal of therapy." Psychiatrist …

Tiverton Man Claims Insanity in Murder Trial

The defense for Tiverton’s Joel Beaulieu says he is not guilty of killing his father by reason of insanity.

Claiming he suffers from “schizoaffective” disorder, the defense pleaded that Tiverton’s Joel Beaulieu is not guilty by reason of insanity Tuesday in Newport Superior Court. He is accused of killing his father, Conrad, in September 2010 and trying to kill his mother, Diane. Beaulieu’s attorney, Jeffrey Pine, said his client waived his right to a jury trial. Judge Melanie Thunberg said the case will resume on Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. Beaulieu appeared in court in a red and tan striped button-down shirt, tan khakis and Nike cross-training sneakers.
