SOUND OFF: Real vs. Artificial Christmas Trees

It's a decision families make every year - were you willing to withstand the cold, sap and needles necessary for an 'authentic' Christmas?

Sure, everyone appreciates some good holiday decor. But have you ever been tempted to take it easy on yourself and purchase an artificial Christmas tree? Purists won't go near them, but for others, the thought of chopping down a tree - leaving needles, sap and leaking water in your living room - is not their idea of a happy holiday.  Despite the hassle, real trees outsell their artificial cousins by more than a 3-to-1 margin each season, according to the National Christmas Tree Association. Bear in mind, of course, that artificial trees can be reused every year. Readers, what do you think? Did you undertake the Griswold family tradition this year or are did an artificial tree do the trick for your family?

In a recent Nielsen survey, it was concluded that 22 million real trees will be sold this year versus nearly 12 million of artificial trees (1.8 to 1, not so much 3 to 1). While this is so, most American households (nearly 83%!) are displaying artificial trees. Share Photos and Videos of Your Children Opening Their Christmas Presents

There's not much better than a child's face when they run to the tree in the morning and start ripping into all the gifts Santa brought them. Share your moments of joy!

"Opening presents is like playing air hockey with God," is what Matthew Inman of The Oatmeal once wrote in trying to capture the joy of children opening gifts on Christmas morning. There's not much better than a child's face when they run to the tree in the morning and start ripping into all the gifts Santa brought them. Let's share those moments here and put a smile on everyone's face with a gallery of Tiverton-Little Compton kids opening their gifts on Christmas morning. Click the "Upload Photos and Videos" button to add your photo or video to our gallery. Who knows, your kid might go viral like the Nintendo 64 kid (see attached video).

How Do You Balance Greed and Gifts?

Consumerism surrounds the holiday season: is greed inevitable, and how do you avoid it?

For those children who celebrate, Christmas' biggest connotation can be the pile of gifts. With this in mind, a panel of staff contributors at The Chicago Tribune tackled the question of whether it's inevitable to see greed in their kids around Christmastime. The parents weighed in on suggestions to remind kids of Christmas spirit. Among their suggestions? Help your kids round up some old toys to donate to charity before giving them new toys. Sign them up to participate in a community service project. The Tribune's advice got us thinking at Patch about how we were taught or are teaching our kids to be less greedy around the holidays. Some of our suggestions? Find a giving tree and let your child pick a name or two off of it, and take them …

What's Your Favorite Holiday Movie?

Tell us your favorite holiday movie.

I'm a junkie for "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation." It's my favorite holiday movie ever. I watch it at least once every year. Clark Griswold. Cousin Eddy. Todd and Margo. Aunt Bethany. Audrey and Rusty. I start to laugh just thinking about the movie, which I've watched a zillion times. What is your favorite holiday movie? Recipe: How to Cook A Perfect Prime Rib Roast

How to cook a perfect prime rib roast

My phone is ringing off the hook, and emails are asking for my prime rib recipe from last year. Prime rib is a very expensive "company's coming" cut of meat, and typically it only goes on sale around the holidays. Rancher Beef rib roasts have large, traditional prime rib bones on one side. It is typically three to four pounds. With tall college guys in the family, we usually think a pound per person, including a bone with each slice. That is an outstanding price, and select a roast that is "marbled" with bits of fat "speckled" in the center of the roast; ask the meat manager to help you select if you have a question. The regular long prime rib bones add flavor and hold the shape of the meat while it cooks, which is important. This "marble…

Help a Local Home Win Patch's 'Deck the House' Contest

Vote for the best-decorated home in a Patch town — there are two Rhode Island homes in the running!

According to users who voted in our annual Deck the House contest, Tyler Warren Horrocks has the best-decorated house in Coventry, and Stanley Marion took top honors in East Greenwich to reach the final round — and you can help one of them win $100,000 for local schools! We had tons of national entries in this year’s Deck the House contest — and in our quest to find the most over-the-top holiday decorations in the country, we’ve seen everything from a life-size Santa to holiday lights so bright they could blind the neighbors. We loved showcasing everyone’s holiday spirit — but Deck the House isn’t over yet. We are still looking for the one home so spectacularly decorated that it could be the national grand prize winner of our contest. We…
