The head of the state's Economic Development Corporation has stepped down following the controversy of Curt Schilling's 38 Studios.
Keith Stokes has stepped down as the head of the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation amid the controversy surrounding Curt Schilling’s videogame company 38 Studios, according to the Providence Journal. The company, headed by the former Red Sox pitcher, defaulted on a $1.125-million payment to the state on May 1. On Wednesday, Schilling and members of 38 Studios met with state and EDC officials in an emergency meeting that was closed to the public. In 2010, EDC approved a $75-million guaranteed loan to the videogame company following 38 Studios’ promise to bring 450 jobs to the state by the end of 2012 and moved its business from Massachusetts to Providence. Stokes, a longtime board member of the EDC, was appointed by former Gov…

Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee is hosting a 'holiday tree' lighting next week, despite objections.
Holiday tree or Christmas tree? Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee is calling the 17-foot spruce tree that will be lit inside the Statehouse rotunda a "holiday tree," even though the General Assembly passed a resolution calling it a "Christmas tree" earlier this year. According to The Providence Journal, the governor is defending his use of the term, saying it honors Rhode Island's heritage as a refuge for religious tolerance three centuries ago. Some state lawmakers criticize his position, and an Associated Press story on the issue has been picked up across the country. News outlets such as The Washington Post, MSNBC and the Huffington Post have all run with the story. The governor is inviting all Rhode Islanders to join him and his wife …

Rhode Islanders are just days away from seeing a legislative proposal that would overhaul the state's pension system, creating a whole new retirement plan for public workers that, according to the Associated Press, would include raising retirement ages and halting any cost-of-living adjustments for retirees. After years of living under a broken pension plan, Gov. Lincoln Chafee told the Providence Journal on Thursday that he thinks all of Rhode Island's taxpayers — even those who don't work as government employees — should "share" the "sacrifice" in fixing the system that so many Rhode Island community and state employees, and school teachers, depend on. While no tax increase is anticipated in the proposal that comes out next week, Chafee …

Hundreds of Rhode Islanders gathered at the State House this week to protest Gov. Lincoln Chafee's backing of a plan that gives undocumented students in-state tuition at public colleges and universities. According to The Providence Journal, Chafee states that the plan, which was voted upon by the Board of Governors for Higher Education last week, will “improve the intellectual and cultural life of our state while strengthening our work force and helping our economy” by helping “more Rhode Islanders to go on to college.” Those who disagree are calling for Chafee to be impeached and blasting him for trying to turn Rhode Island into a "sanctuary" for illegal immigrants, according to an AP report. In that report, Keith Anderson, a teacher at …
