Tiverton To Face High Infrastructure Costs To Develop Industrial Park

Representatives from the state Economic Development Foundation warned the town council on Monday that costs to install roadways and utility infrastructure in the Tiverton industrial park could cost $9.2 million.

Initial investments in roadways and utility infrastructure at Tiverton’s 172-acre industrial park could cost $9.2 million, the Tiverton Town Council learned on Monday. Representatives from the Economic Development Foundation of Rhode Island presented a seven-page preliminary analysis of the 66-lot subdivision prepared by DiPrete Engineering and approved by the council in June that spelled out the initial costs of preparing the industrial park for development. According to Marcel A. Valois, vice president of the nonprofit economic growth company, under the approved plan, 93 acres would be divided into lots averaging 1.4 acres. The marketing strategy would be to accommodate small businesses and combine lots to accommodate larger ones. The …

A 'Step Forward' for Tiverton's Industrial Park

The Tiverton Town Council unanimously approved changes to the the zoning ordinance that will make the town's 177-acre industrial park more attractive to developers.

The Tiverton Council voted unanimously on Monday to approve changes to the zoning ordinance that will attract large-scale developer's to the town's industrial park off of Fish Road. The changes are intended to open the 177-acre plot off of Route 24 near the Fish Road exit to any business from renewable energy - as was proposed by Natural Energy Generation in February - to medical to offices. "From our standpoint of economic development this is a step toward progressive development of the industrial park," said Leonard Schmidt, president of the town's Economic Development Committee. "This process has been going on in the town for about 20 years and it is coming to a point where we have several opportunities to turn it into an income …

The US as of 4-15-2011 had the highest combined Federal and State business taxes in the world at 39.2%. With Obamacare an additional 22 new taxes will be levied on businesses. With a Progressive sitting in the state house another in the White House there is little chance of the business climate improving in Tiverton or RI, despite the TC's 'pro' business attitude. Too many of our fellow …   more ›

Tiverton Economic Working Group Weighs Ideas For Growth Plan

The Tiverton Economic and Community Growth Working group is looking for ways to make Tiverton more inviting to incoming business, and hope to present a plan to the Town Council in two months.

The Tiverton Economic and Community Growth Working Group held its third meeting at the Tiverton Town Hall on Tuesday night, continuing talking about developing a consensus on how to improve Tiverton’s economic environment, particularly by fighting the perception that the town is “unfriendly” to incoming business. The group contains members from various interest groups in town, with the intent of unifying toward the common goal of improving the town’s economic viability. Councilor Brett Pelletier, who is chairman of the working group, stated last night that he hopes to have a consolidated report containing potential plans for growth ready for the Town Council two months from now. Several town department heads last night gave ideas for …

It was in the middle of filled land with nothing but fields around it where Star pickles grew produce to make the pickled products they still sell today . They were the only business on that stretch of road before the mall. Swansea mall drive is booming …   more ›

Fifteen Miles of Main Road

Develop As Development Will

Nobody opposes economic development, but what do they support?

Tiverton Town Council President Jay Lambert no doubt captured the sense of all involved when he said, "It would be hard to imagine that anybody is opposed to some sort of economic development in this town." Nobody's opposed to economic development, just like nobody wants higher taxes, just like nobody wants to give town and school employees blank checks, while everybody wants to pay them as much as possible. These are all meaningless statements without the details of what, where, and how much. Speaking to the council on November 22 on the perennial topic of securing a town grocery store, Economic Development Commission President Leonard Schmidt noted that Tiverton's shape and location present unique challenges when it comes to attracting …

Going from commercial to residential, creating non conforming uses all over town. With out the ability to expand, or even replace their existing buildings, they were destine to fail. All of the main roads used to be zoned commercial two hundred feet …   more ›
