Tiverton Propane Company Fuels Area Business For 60 Years

Phil's Propane, of Tiverton, celebrated its 60th year in business this weekend.

More than a half century and three family generations later, Phil's Propane Company, of Tiverton, marked a milestone this weekend. The business celebrated its 60-year anniversary with a party Saturday with customers, friends and neighbors. Owner and President Phil Viveiros, 60, said the company began on his birthday. "We want all those people to come who helped us keep in business," he said in an interview Friday. "It's a big thing, especially for a propane business, especially today." The company started in Viveiros' grandfather's garage in Common Fence Point in Portsmouth, selling bottled gas when fuel was not yet popular. Philip C. Viveiros used his garage to store the propane bottles, and he delivered and exchanged bottles from there…

I remember riding my bicycle to the end of the point (CFP) in the early 1960's and telling Phil's grandmother we needed propane, later that day his grandfather would come out and exchange an empty tank for a full one. Congradualtions on 60 years, Phil!   more ›

Tiverton's Parents As Teachers Program Sits On Unstable Funding

The heralded early childhood education program's success is directly tied to the annual funding it receives to cater to Newport County families.

Martha Higham, of Tiverton, sat with her nearly 4-year-old daughter Genaveve putting together a puzzle last week in a Pocasset School classroom. Her daughter enters pre-kindergarten in the fall and has participated in the Parents As Teachers program for three years. Parent educator Joan Macomber makes weekly home visits to Genaveve to work on her development and address any parenting and education challenges she's facing. "We love Ms. Joan coming to the house," Higham said. "It's a good thing. She's like a second mother. Joan provides me with resources." The home visits are part of the Parents As Teachers' national model, aiming to work with families to help their child grow up healthy, safe and ready to learn. It's customized to meet the …

Hundreds Hoping For Work at Tiverton Tom's Market

The market, slated to open later this month in Tiverton, held a recruitment fair Tuesday. It continues today.

People of all ages lined up outside the new Tom's Market in Tiverton Tuesday for the first day of a recruitment fair. The line stretched behind the Dunkin' Donuts next door. The fair continues today at 492 Main Road from 4 to 6 p.m. Almost 350 people showed up Tuesday to apply for one of 40 positions expected to be filled.  Reached late Tuesday, co-owner Glenn Place said they've already culled through the first round of applicants, will take the second round Wednesday and make phone calls by the weekend. New hires will begin training as soon as next week. "We move fast and furious," he said, adding that he spoke with a lot of good people, a good mix of entry level and experienced applicants. "It's so incredible we could pull from such a …

Powerball Expansion Has Meant Less Business for Tiverton Store Owners

Despite the latest Powerball Jackpot estimated at $250 million, increased ticket prices and the neighboring state of Massachusetts acquiring Powerball has hurt Tiverton convenience store owners.

Elaine's Country Store in Tiverton has giant letters out front and a sign at the clerk counter telling customers about the $250 million estimated Powerball Jackpot, but there aren't any lines forming. Owner Joseph Sabino said it's been a little busier than usual due to the jackpot, but since neighboring Massachusetts got Powerball, there has been a big change in how many people come in to play numbers at his Tiverton store. "It's partly the economy," he said Wednesday, "but I don't have these big lines coming in to play exclusively." Sabino said before Rhode Island and Massachusetts shared Powerball and Mega Millions, residents from as far as Cape Cod, New Bedford and Fall River would come to Tiverton to play Powerball. "I used to drive …

Health and Economic Uncertainties Can't Falter the Strength of Tiverton Salon Owner

Doreen Enos, owner of Alter Ego Salon in Tiverton, is feeling healthier and back to work after several trips to the hospital and coping with the trends of the down economy.

Doreen Enos stood behind a salon chair in North Tiverton last week, tending to a friend's hair while the two shared a laugh. Enos said she is grateful to see her friends at Alter Ego Salon more frequently these days. Some are coming in more often because of the holiday season, but others are finding their way back via word-of-mouth, after hearing that Enos is back to work and feeling much better. After the market meltdown in 2008, Enos, a hairdresser for over 30 years, had a hiatal hernia. That's a protrusion from the upper part of the stomach into the thorax. She had to have surgery, but that didn’t go right and she wound up with a blood clot in her right lung. Then, she ended up in intensive care for two weeks with a heart condition and …
