Tiverton Christmas Tree Pickup Schedule

PAYT customers can leave Christmas trees out for disposal next week and later in January.

The Tiverton Public Works Department will collect Christmas trees curbside during the weeks of Jan. 7 - 11 and Jan. 14 - 19. Tiverton residents are asked to place their discarded Christmas trees curbside, adjacent to their trash, on the same day as the normal trash collection. The trees must not be in any form of plastic bag, and should be reasonably free of tinsel and decorations. The Christmas trees will be mulched by a chipper as collected. The resultant mulch will be made available free to Tiverton residents at the entrance to the landfill, during normal operating hours. Christmas trees not collected during these special collection periods may be dropped off at the Tiverton landfill on Main Road during normal Landfill operating hours…

SOUND OFF: Real vs. Artificial Christmas Trees

It's a decision families make every year - were you willing to withstand the cold, sap and needles necessary for an 'authentic' Christmas?

Sure, everyone appreciates some good holiday decor. But have you ever been tempted to take it easy on yourself and purchase an artificial Christmas tree? Purists won't go near them, but for others, the thought of chopping down a tree - leaving needles, sap and leaking water in your living room - is not their idea of a happy holiday.  Despite the hassle, real trees outsell their artificial cousins by more than a 3-to-1 margin each season, according to the National Christmas Tree Association. Bear in mind, of course, that artificial trees can be reused every year. Readers, what do you think? Did you undertake the Griswold family tradition this year or are did an artificial tree do the trick for your family?

In a recent Nielsen survey, it was concluded that 22 million real trees will be sold this year versus nearly 12 million of artificial trees (1.8 to 1, not so much 3 to 1). While this is so, most American households (nearly 83%!) are displaying artificial trees. State To Hold Tree Lighting Year After Name Controversy

Gov. Chafee's office backtracks from an announcement Monday that there would be no official tree-lighting ceremony this year.

There will be a tree-lighting ceremony this year after all. Gov. Lincoln Chafee's top press aide said Tuesday she spoke in error Monday when she said there would be no tree lighting ceremony.  "There will be an official tree lighting ceremony at the State House with the Governor in attendance," said Christine Hunsinger in an email statement. No date has been set. Now, the question is, will protesters turn up again as they did last year, when Gov. Lincoln Chafee referred to the large evergreen in the middle of the State House rotonda as a holiday tree instead of a Christmas tree. The tree was erected Monday. Last December, Chafee was lambasted by GOP lawmakers, some talk show hosts, and the Roman Catholic Bishop Tobin for his decision to …

It's Christmas Time In Tiverton

Tiverton's Tree Lighting was Sunday afternoon at Town Hall, where hundreds attended to see Santa and sing carols.

The night was cold but the air was festive as hundreds of townspeople and their friends gathered at the Tiverton Town Hall to watch the lighting of the beautiful 18-year-old blue spruce. It felt like Christmas was right around the corner as Town Councilor Brett Pelletier read "Twas the Night Before Christmas" to the hushed crowd.   Then the first through fourth grade students from Fort Barton Elementary School, donned in their favorite Santa Caps, belted out a number of our all time favorite Christmas carols. The songs got the crowd warmed up with everyone there singing loudly forgetting all about the cold. Amy-Lynn Casey, a third grader at Fort Barton, was one of the carolers.  "With two older brothers who did this when they were in Fort …
