For fun in the sun without the crowds, check out these hidden shorelines across Newport County.

Dogs Banned From Goosewing Beach To Protect Piping Plovers

Piping Plovers, a threatened shorebird species, need residents help to protect their fragile habitat along Goosewing Beach in Little Compton.

Dogs are banned from Goosewing beach through Labor Day to help reduce the threat to the federally-protected Piping Plovers nesting at Goosewing Beach. The Piping Plover is a federally-threatened shorebird protected under the Endangered Species Act. These charismatic shorebirds nest and raise their young on Goosewing Beach each spring and summer. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service implements a piping plover recovery plan which mandates that dogs be prohibited on beaches where pet owners fail to keep their pets leashed and under control. As part of the plover recovery effort, The Nature Conservancy and the Little Compton Police are requesting cooperation from the public to leave their pets at home. This Week is National EMS Week (May 19-25)

What would you say to local, state and national Emergency Medical Service personnel?

This week -- May 19 to 25 -- is National EMS Week and the theme is "EMS: One Mission. One Team." In 1968, President Gerald Ford signed the first EMS Week proclamation, designating a time for the nation to celebrate the emergency medical technician paramedic as well as an opportunity to educate the public about the critical role of EMS in the community, according to EMS.gov.  May 22 has been designated as Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) Day, according to emsweekideas.org.  Every day our local, state and national EMS respond to crisis situations. Recently, Boston's EMS was in the spotlight because of last month's bombings; and today, Emergency Medical Service personnel in Moore, Oklahoma, are in the national spotlight as …

Construction crews are expected to finish installing the toll gantry in Portsmouth on Friday morning.

Commuters traveling from Portsmouth over the Sakonnet River Bridge on Route 24 will drive underneath the tolling gantry for the first time Friday morning - but they won't be charged until this summer.  Although construction crews are slated to complete the installation of the tolling infrastructure by early Friday morning, the technology won't be ready to start charging drivers for at least another three to four weeks. "Yes, tonight [Thursday] it will be erected across the roadway and be up by the time people get up tomorrow [Friday] morning, but this doesn't mean it will be operational," said David Darlington, chairman of the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority. "By [Friday] morning, it will just be in place. Equipment will still…

Jim L, it is obvious that there are 2 of you. By the way, who are these T1 people?? Sounds like something to do with car racing. To be fair, as the gatherer of the signatures it's understandable if your political IQ is below standard. The fault really belongs to those folks who took advantage of you by asking you to get the signatures.   more ›
