The Little Compton Free Public Library began as a private entity in 1929 and merged with the Brownell Library on The Commons in 1963. Headed by Director Beth Ryan, the library has about 30,000 titles, which includes an extensive children's section, e-books, audio books, periodical databases, compact discs and DVDs. There are various childrens's programs throughout the year, as well as passes to area museums.

The Friends of Brownell Library is a non-profit organization that supports the toddler and after school story hour program, as well as many others, to provide services beyond the municipal library budget.
