Tiverton Girls' Soccer Beats An Undefeated Mount St. Charles

The Tiverton Girls' summer soccer league beat-out the previously undefeated team on Tuesday, preparing them for a Division 1 crossover game against Tollgate High School next week.

The Tiverton High School girls soccer team beat previously undefeated Mount St. Charles 1-0 in a spirited Ocean State Summer Cup Division 2 contest Tuesday night.

In an extremely tight contest that saw action swing from both ends of the field, Tiverton emerged victorious on a goal in the 58th minute of action. Mount St. Charles came out strong in the first half and generated several good scoring chances against the Tiverton girls including one sizzling shot that Tiverton goalkeeper, Elizabeth Janick, just tipped over the crossbar of the net. Tiverton made a formation adjustment and the game settled into a prolonged period of midfield play with few scoring chances for either team.

After a scoreless 1st half, the Tiverton girls asserted themselves with better passing and combination play. However Mount St. Charles did not yield until Amy Thornton drove a low shot into the net after a corner kick from Jackie Wilson. Thornton, normally a defender, was pressed into forward duty for this game and delivered what would prove to be the game-winner. Tiverton then had to withstand a furious rally from Mount St. Charles as they tried to preserve their undefeated record. Strong defensive play from Alli Benevides, Rachel Mauricio, Maya Bergandy and Haley Higginbottom preserved the 1-0 lead for Tiverton and Janick made several routine saves when Mount St. Charles did manage to get a shot off.

Tiverton has one game remaining against Toll Gate High School in the series. This is a division cross-over game and Tiverton will need to play their best against this Division 1 opponent.
