The 'Scoop' on Schultzy's: Area's Newest Ice Cream Shop

Beat the heat with a sweet or savory treat from Schulty's Snack Shack on Park Avenue this summer.

Schultzy's Snack Shack, the latest grab-and-go eatery on Portsmouth's waterfront, is scooping up sweet treats and serving savory delights to tourists and locals alike this summer.

Situated beside Flo's Clam Shack on Park Avenue, Schultzy's endless flavors of both hard and soft-serve ice cream make the perfect complement to to any lazy summer day.

The new ice cream shop also sits directly across from the Tiverton shore, just a quick boat ride away.

The casual burger, fry and ice cream joint may be affectionately deemed a 'snack shack,' but with a single glance, customers can see this place is a cut above the rest. With detailed stone work throughout the building, state-of-the-art equipment and a floor so clean you could literally eat off of it, it's clear that Schultzy's owners - you guessed it - the Schultz family of Middletown, are no novices when it comes to running a restaurant.

A close-knit family, the Schultz's have more than 30 years of combined experience working in restaurants across Aquidneck Island, including the Atlantic Beach Club in Middletown and the Brick Alley Pub in Newport. Despite their experience in high-end cuisine, the laid-back family envisioned their own spot as an affordable, family-friendly hangout that would entice customers with its casual vibe and summer-friendly eats.

"We have a great view, free parking, free beach parking and very reasonable prices so that people can come here and afford it," said Deborah Schultz, the family matriarch.

With her daughter Karrah by her side, the women of the Schultz family run the front of the shop, interacting with customers and serving up a side of their good-natured smiles with the delicious burgers, hot dogs and sweet treats.

Behind the grill the Schultz men - Kurt and his son Jason - serve up a variety of American comfort food - burgers, hot dogs and french fries. Despite the seaside location, Schultzy's doesn't serve any seafood because the the Schultz's respect the established restaurant's around them and said they wanted to bring something new to the area for patrons.

"We bought the location and the first thing we thought was that we didn't want to compete with Flo's," said Karrah. "The owner is a good guy and we wanted to do our own thing."

"We want to complement Flo's with ice cream, not compete with their clam rolls," added Deborah.

The menu at Schutlzy's keeps is simple. Offering up just burgers, hot dogs and french fries in addition to its ice cream cones and sundaes. The snack shack's full menu can be viewed on its website.

Despite the limited menu, Chef Kurt still let's his culinary flair shine with a few tasty and original burger and hot dog recipes. Grab a seat outside at one of the shack's many picnic tables across the street from the Sakonnet River and chow down to find out for yourself just how tasty they are.

Don't forget to give Fry Guy, the shack's mascot, a high five after your meal.

Schultzy's opened in June after nearly a year of renovations, and the family members said they couldn't be happier to be up and running.

"This is our dream and we are here," said Deborah.

Schultzy's is open Monday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. through October.
