Tennis Championships Brings Full Week of Events

By Olga Enger

Once the Wimbledon titles have been claimed, the professional tennis tour moves to the United States for the summer season, and the first stop is right here in Newport, for the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships, July 8 – 14.

The Hall of Fame Tennis Championships is the only men's professional tennis tournament in the Northeast outside of the US Open. It is also the only tournament played on grass courts in the country.

This is the event’s 37th consecutive year in Rhode Island, but the historic courts at Newport have been in use much longer, having hosted the first US Open from 1881 – 1914, before it moved to NYC.

The field includes two-time defending champion, currently the No. 21 ranked player in the world John Isner; No. 1 American Sam Querrey (world No. 19); Popular New England native James Blake – former world No. 4; two-time Grand Slam champ Lleyton Hewitt.
