The Tiverton High School girls summer league team continued their winning ways on Tuesday night, defeating the Chariho girls 5-1 at Ninigret Park in Charlestown.
Tiverton came out aggressive early and had several good scoring chances before finally breaking through in the 23rd minute on a goal by Colleen Gillis off of a perfectly placed corner kick from Eileen Kinnane.
Six minutes later Amber Silva split the Chariho defense with a pass to Samantha Welchman who finished the play by tucking the ball into the lower right corner. The score remained 2-0 until the second half when Olivia Bergandy took over the game and scored two goals within a seven-minute span shortly after half time.
On her first goal, Bergandy was on the receiving end of another long, well-placed cross from Kinnane which Bergandy slammed into the back of the net. Her next goal came when Bergandy stole the ball deep in the Chariho end and drove toward goal in a breakaway sprint before finishing with a crisp shot to the corner.
Tiverton’s final goal was scored by Erica Farias who broke in alone off a feed from Regan Burke to complete the scoring.
Chariho’s lone goal came on a penalty shot after an inadvertent hand ball during the run of play.
Mid-field play control was key for Tiverton, who was led by Caroline Wilson, Grace Cavanagh and Jackie Wilson. Tiverton’s defense was solid throughout and anchored by Maya Bergandy, Kayla Paull and Amy Thornton. Sharing goalkeeper duties were Haley Higginbottom and Elizabeth Janick.
With the victory Tiverton improves to 4-1 in the league.
