Tiverton Middle School Boosters Plan Pasta Dinner To Support Sports Growth

The boosters' spokesman says this is a huge fundraiser to help the group move forward with its winter basketball program, and hopefully some spring sports

Since getting the to begin interscholastic sports programs at , the Athletic Booster Club continues to grow the program and seek funding support.

Spokesman Edward Rishmany reported they will be holding a pasta dinner next Tuesday, Dec. 6 at , 265 Stafford Road, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. He said this is their first big fundraiser.

Tickets are $8 per person (ages 3 to 10 are $5 and a family four-pack is $30). The menu will include pasta, meatballs, salad, rolls, beverage and dessert prepared by parents and students.

Rishmany said the sports buzz started at middle school a few years ago with successful fall boys' and girls' cross country program, competing in the Rhode Island Principal's Committee on Athletics (RIPCOA). They had more than 60 students participate. Last year, the School Committee approved forming the Boosters and expanding the athletics.

Last winter, the basketball program formed as a club, catering to more than 30 sixth to eighth graders, Rishmany said.

"Based on that, we wanted to jump in full board," he said. "As this gains momentum, we hope to add sports in the spring."

Since support continued to grow, the school now looks to compete this winter in the RIPCOA winter basketball league. The season just started, and a schedule of the games is printed at the bottom of the post.

With growing support comes a serious focus on a long-term financial plan to sustain the program, Rishmany said, and they are looking for community support. He hopes the pasta dinner provides the visibility they need.

"Besides contributing to the physical development of our children, competitive athletics build character, foster teamwork and create a school spirit at the middle school level, where both participants and supporters unite," he said.
