Portsmouth High Needs Your Help To Celebrate 50th Anniversary

"[The year] 1963 was quite a year for America," writes Portsmouth High School Principal Robert Littlefield in a recent e-mail to parents. "It was also a big year for Portsmouth as we opened our doors for the very first time. After over 320 years, Portsmouth had a high school of its own."

In honor of the 50th anniversary, the school plans to make the upcoming Homecoming Week a special celebration of 50 years of Portsmouth High School, culminating with an annual parade and festivities at the home football game vs. Cranston West on Saturday, Sept. 28.

"In order to prepare for the festivities, I would like to issue a call to Portsmouth High School alumni," Littlefield wrote.

The school is seeking the following from Portsmouth High alumni:

The PHS Archive: We want to dedicate a large display case to the first 50 Years of PHS. Do you have an item you would loan us to include in the display? We are particularly interested in the 1960's but would also accept items that commemorate big events at PHS. A letterman sweater? A newspaper headline? Please consider donating it for our display.

We promise it will be well-cared for and returned at the end of the school year. Just drop it off in the Main Office anytime during the hours of 7 -3.

Calling All Homecoming Kings and Queens: For years, Portsmouth High has selected outstanding members of its senior class to represent the school on Homecoming Day. Far from a beauty or popularity contest, the selection of Homecoming King and Queen is an honor bestowed on seniors who best exemplify the best qualities of our school.

If you are a former King or Queen, we want to recognize you during the half-time festivities of our Homecoming Game on Saturday, Sept. 28.

Do you know a former King or Queen? Please get word to them to contact me at littlefieldr@portsmouthschoolsri.org. We would love to have them back on John F. Kennedy field as our guests!
