Cranston Senior Signs Letter of Intent to Division I School

Chiara Ponko of Cranston, a student at Bay View Academy, signed a letter of intent to attend Louisville University.

Three Bay View Academy seniors and varsity crew members recently signed letters of intent to Division I universities including Cranston's Chiara Ponko.

Ponko signed a letter of intent to attend Louisville University in Kentucky on the Bay View campus flanked by Bay View Crew Coach Albin Moser, Bay View Athletic Director Cindy Neal and Assistant Athletic Director Sue Reposa.

Also signing letters of intent were Julia Calise of East Providence, who signed a letter of intent to attend the University of Connecticut and Erin O'Connell, of Barrington, who signed to attend Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va.

All three schools are Division I schools.

All three girls are members of the varsity crew team at Bay View.

The National Letter of Intent (NLI) program is administered by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).  According to the NCAA website, “the NLI is a voluntary program with regard to both institutions and student-athletes…By signing a National Letter of Intent, a prospective student-athlete agrees to attend the designated college or university for one academic year. Pursuant to the terms of the National Letter of Intent program, participating institutions agree to provide athletics financial aid to the student-athlete, provided he/she is admitted to the institution and is eligible for financial aid under NCAA rules.”
