Tiverton Council Approves New Road With Bridge Completion

Tiverton will soon gain a new, public road due to the completion of the Sakonnet River Bridge.

The Tiverton Town Council approved a request Monday night by Town Administrator Jim Goncalo to accept responsibility for the Quaker Avenue connector.

The council agreed the Quaker Avenue extension should become a town-owned and maintained road.

During construction of the new Sakonnet River Bridge, the town administrator asked the Rhode Island Department of Transportation to help residents living in the construction zone.

The DOT constructed a connector road from Quaker Avenue across Central Avenue to allow passage for those living in the lower Quaker Avenue/Bluff Avenue area.

Since the Sakonnet River Bridge is nearing completion, the town of Tiverton is asking DOT to finish the roadway and transfer ownership to town.

"I have since asked RI DOT to complete the road rather than remove it as I understand residents are happy with it," Goncalo wrote in his request to the council.

The town administrator will now make arrangements with the state to transfer ownership of the road to the town.
