7% is not a landside, far from it, but i do believe that in the end all voters will benefit from this

I am really shocked that this was as close as it was. If this didnt pass we would have lost the Essex library when the state stopped supporting it. Crazy stuff. But not to worry! we have the FTR now, the TCC can just say "too bad" and we will then all have to go to portsmouth for library services.

Biggest con job in the history of Tiverton and dumbest location possible is why it was so close. Wait until the annual costs of the loan come out. Wait until the Essex Library does not close and they try to have us taxpayers pay to keep three librarys open. Now you know why they were obsessed with a special election, it would not have passed at a general election. Here go more for sale signs, more unsold homes and more plummeting house values. Thanks Lee

Congratulations to both library supporters & FTR supporters. The majority chose, and I respect those decisions even if I don't always agree with them.

I wish there was a way to make only those who voted for the stupid library be responsible for paying the increased taxes.
Joe Sousa. November 09, 2011 at 03:43 AM
While I still have concerns over cost, the people made an informed decision. Congratulations to the Library trust. They fought hard for this day ,and deserve it.
Dan D November 09, 2011 at 04:02 AM
I sure hope they do not close the Essex library! It can stay as a children's library. and cost? at best, it would be like $20 per year, per taxpayer. More than likely though, it will be much much less than that. But not to worry! your TCC now has the power to override the voters and drive anyone who does not think like them out of town! Not to fear, your taxes will go down as property values drop because everyone starts putting their houses on the market. this town is incredibly anti-children and families. I really do wish I had know about this bs before I moved here. I would have taken that house in LC I looked at instead.

What is the ETA of the new library?

DAN D,your statements about tiverton be anti child are just to over the top, this town has always tried to tend to its children, fine playgrounds, an outstanding basketball program, terrific baseball from minors up brand new park at bugarmarsh road, and to make such a stupid statement i think offends the folks who have over the years given freely hundreds of hours of their time, Feel free to move out of this town having lived here for quite awhile i can tell you that your not going to match what this town has.lead, follow or get out of the way, please
Just Another Taxpayer November 09, 2011 at 12:44 PM
Joe, you are hooligan.
Just Another Taxpayer November 09, 2011 at 12:45 PM
Congratulations to the supporters of the library. You worked hard to get this referendum approved!
Dan D November 09, 2011 at 12:45 PM
being anti library is being anti children. This library is only going to cost 2.9 million, with the state picking up the other 4.1 million and if it was not approved, or if the TCC decides to squash it with their new veto rule, then we lose ALL library services in tiverton. But no, you are not antichild. You love children, you just dont want them to have things like books and schools.

Congratulations to the library supporters. I'm surprised it was this close, but I guess I underestimated the the concerns of the voters. Either way, in the long run this will have a lot more positive impact on the town than the FTR. It's a great deal, in a great location that will allow it to become a hub for the community and for small businesses that should take advantage of the traffic. I look forward to the ribbon cutting.

With the many new homes being built in town the library will only attract more families. a good thing, surronding towns have less and less land available for develpment by industry and small bussines, our zoneing must be changed back to attracting them to this town,I still believe a Marriot of some type would fit great, Nusc and the war college are also still expanding, and land in the indy park must be cheaper then middletown or Portsmouth, Dicks sporting goods is looking for a site on the island i hear, bring em here, big big marina being built on riverside drive, that will need many support bussineess, while there are many of the things needed in portsmouth there is more than enough jobs that could be created here, my son and his girl both have good well paying jobs in the boating industry there, and angain, Nusc, the folk and jazz show newport weekends, the bristol parade all thing that would bring people to stay at a hotel in town, Jim Karam (you know the evil guy who bought the nuns) builds Marriots andwhile he might have had differences with others in this town it might be worth while to at least approach him, Mr Edwards, who has shouwn so much interest in this town of late should be as we speak pursueing tax breaks and in centives for the industrial park, and one last thing SELL THE SCHOOLS
Castor Troy November 09, 2011 at 04:12 PM
The taxes in this town are already through the roof...hmm, instead of getting some businesses in here, let's build a library. Stupid idea!

Neighbors, I’m stunned to read comments such as “stupid library”, “Biggest con job in the history of Tiverton” and “dumbest location possible” on here. I have always enjoyed Essex Library. As much as I love that old building, it is obvious that the building has become too antiquated for our needs. It is not handicap accessible, is far too small and is bursting at the seams. A building not accessible to ALL residents is not acceptable, nor is it in compliance with state and fed. law. The new location is adjacent to a beautiful new development, an updated public park, and is near three schools. I’m baffled at how this might be viewed as foolish. Groups which presently struggle to find available public meeting spaces will find a home in a modern facility we can proudly call our own. How wonderful it will be to see our students working and reading after school in a building large enough to welcome them, nurture their minds, and give them a sense of belonging in our community. This referendum did not happen on a whim. It’s been over ten years in the making. The building committee has sustained for much longer than most people care to or are able to dedicate to a single cause. That is impressive. The presence of the state-provided money makes this the time to make the two decade quest a reality for our town. This library is meant to bring our community together. Let’s not taint that with comments which only serve to pull us apart.

Not to mention, books are pretty much going the way of being obsolete. Within a couple years every home will have a tablet (iPad) that can fit literally thousands of books on one device! Do kids even use books anymore for school projects/research papers? Um there is this thing called the Internet thats been around for a while. Just another example of Tiverton being a town that is going backwards in time.
Problem Solver November 09, 2011 at 07:02 PM
It is obivous that you have not been inside a library in quite sometime. Wouldn't you think that Libraries could also have technology in them? Not all books are offered electronically, so the need to have them is obvious, and you also don't need 100 copies of a book that is offered electronically. I can see why people wanted to vote it down, because they themselves have no clue what a Library has become, A PLACE OF RESOURCES!! Internet, Ipads, and computers are all resources not just BOOKS!! If this is the thinking about the library issue, then I can also see why the FTR won by as much as it did.
Joe Sousa. November 09, 2011 at 07:38 PM
Sell the old Library to pay on the bonds .Help Dan La Shill find a new home ,out of Tiverton
Tom November 10, 2011 at 04:07 PM
Maybe now the schools in town will have to teach the kids to read.
Problem Solver November 10, 2011 at 08:12 PM
Wonder why the Library vote was so close and the FTR vote wasn't? Easy answer, The FTR supporters DO NOT support the Library!! If they did then the Library vote also should have won by a margin of 2-1. So I want to the Library supporters to be warned in the coming time, and do not rest until it is finished in 2014. Becareful and make sure that the Council doesn't and try and cut it out of the budget.
Sick of Tiverton November 12, 2011 at 12:25 PM
How about the rest of us WHO DONT want a 7 mill dollar library? How about when RI doesnt give us any money...who will pay for this? AND...what is going to happen to the Beautiful hystorical LIBRARY we have already?? ANd now we have to pay to heat 3 vacant buildings all winter!! This is the most ridiculous thing Ive ever heard of....I didnt know this was Hollywood!! Maybe you can write a letter to the children of this town explaining to them that they will NEVER be able to live here at this rate!!
Sick of Tiverton November 12, 2011 at 12:38 PM
AND...i dont care what the library has In them....almost every home has an internet...and if you say ..."cant afford computer"...well if you live in Tiverton, you can afford ONE COMPUTER PER MONTH with what we pay in taxes!!!! We didnt need the TAJ MAHAL as a library in this town! The reason this town wants a million dollar new library is because under the old law, they cant touch the money in the old library...NOW THEY CAN!! The dont care about anyone in this town..they want to be able to TOUCH the money!!!! Whats next, alight at the Rec...that we wont use like Fish RD? We are going to need it when ALL the other towns come here to see the new million dollar LIBRARY!! I live near here and I dont want the TRAFFIC! Isnt that the excuse they gave for the little MALL..too much traffic...well...i dont wan the traffic here!!
Rug Doctor November 12, 2011 at 10:08 PM
We can use the new library building as a shelter for all of us put out of our homes due to the high taxes.
Sick of Tiverton April 04, 2012 at 01:27 PM
OMG People!!!! We are NOT anti child at all.. BUT NO ONE NEEDS A MILLION DOLLAR LIBRARY WHEN WE HAVE A BEAUTIFUL ONE ALREADY! This doesnt mean we are anti-children...(i have children)...it means that millions for a new library that we have to pay for is STUPID!!!!! As a matter of fact, I love the new childrens rec. startting to look awesome! But a million dollar library HELL NO!
Just Another Taxpayer April 04, 2012 at 04:57 PM
