Gordon Apologizes, Admits Being Alcoholic

State Rep. Dan Gordon spoke to reporters at a press conference Wednesday morning in Portsmouth.

admitted to being an alcoholic and refused to relinquish his public office unless there is "public outcry," during a Wednesday morning press conference in Portsmouth.

Gordon, 42, of 35 Alan Ave., Portsmouth, was arrested on Friday, Sept. 16, as a fugitive from justice on a Massachusetts warrant for failure to appear on an eluding charge and other motor vehicle violations, according to the State Police report.

The freshman representative began Wednesday with an apology to his constituents.

"To my constituents, the voters of District 71, I apologize for any embarrassment I might have caused you with what has been in the media regarding my past," he said.

The representative refused to step down from office, also promising to "run again."

, spoke again about "self-medicating with alcohol." He claims the "self-medicating" was to treat post-traumatic stress from wartime service.

Gordon, a Marine Corps veteran, told reporters Wednesday he was wounded in his right leg by exploding shrapnel during a tour in Iraq in 1991. He was positioned eight miles south of Baghdad at the time of the injury, he said.

Gordon also admitted to being charged in Massachusetts with operating under the influence (OUI) of alcohol, but said he did not remember when the arrest took place.

When asked by a reporter if he felt he had an obligation to the voters to disclose his criminal past, Gordon said, "It's all about optics. Quite frankly, if we talk numbers to constituents, it's all about optics. No one would win office with a placard around their neck."

Gordon said again he was "unaware" of the outstanding warrant, and he claimed there is nothing else the public does not know about. "I think it's pretty much an open book now," he said. "It's all out there."

Is this guy serious? He knows exactly where he was allegedly wounded in Iraq but he can't remember when he was arrested for OUI? WOW! What about the other dozen or so times Gordon was arrested ? Does he not remember being arrested or is he simply avoiding owning up to his past actions?

Resign Dan Gordon. I am so confused as to why you keep saying that you will resign only if there is a public outcry. Well there has been a public outcry but you for some reason are in another world and have not realized that there are only a very small few that are standing behind you. You frequent these blogs so you must know how people feel

Hang in there Dan we need your vote on Pension reform and the other important issues this fall. I know you can get it together, and help is available for your illness. Take the help, and your friends will support you.

He must not be paying attention to the man on the street interviews saying he should resign. Hide under your bed, Dan. Then it'll seem like you're safe. I just hope he can expose those meddling kids at the high school. LOL.

Thank you governor Chafee. Hopefully someone can convince him to resign. Why has noone looked into his military record or his general contracting service yet either? There is much more to this.

I think Governor Chafee should resign. The majority of the state has been trying to convince Linc for months.

I love that he gave a press conference in front of a bar. Did he take the reporters out for a beer after the conference.

Gordon said, "It's all about optics. Quite frankly, if we talk numbers to constituents, it's all about optics. " What on earth does that mean?

I jus founf this wonderful article on public service. It was located on the East Bay Patriots web site. Given this type of high standard, I am sure they will be calling for Dan's resignation very soon. "We the People are created in the image of God with certain Unalienable Rights. All people should live by the Golden Rule and treat others, as we would like to be treated. Public Officials have been placed in a higher position of Honor to represent the Best of the Nation to protect our Unalienable Rights (God given Rights), both for their children and our children for the future of America. ---It is more blessed to give than to receive. He or She who wants to be the Greatest must be Servant to the People. All Public Officials should aspire to be Honorable and it is the duty of the people to uphold the Public Officials who are willing to do the right thing to protect our Unalienable Rights (God given Rights). Do they think that Dan has been honorable or even honest.

Hi All...I am not going to profess that I know all the local politics but please Dan Gordon give it a rest already. I click on PATCH and it's Dan Gordon... The lousy trash bags that cost $1.00 each and rip so easily are more interesting than Dan Gordon.
