State lawmakers are scrambling to figure out how to pay for HealthSource RI once federal funding runs out.
One method would be to add an additional user fee to cover the program's projected annual cost of $24 million starting in 2015.
The Providence Journal reported the user fee would be about $550 if all of the roughly 44,000 uninsured people in the state signed up for the health insurance program.
Lawmakers are also considering shifting control of the exchange to the federal government if they can't find a way to pay for it.
