Two Rescued From Sakonnet River, Injuries Unknown

Two people were rescued from the water just off of Little Compton's shores around 8 p.m. tonight.

Two people were rescued from the waters off of Little Compton's shore shortly after 8 p.m. on Monday and their injuries are still unknown, according to Little Compton Police Chief Sidney Wordell.

Police received an emergency call at 7:51 p.m. from a Little Compton resident who reportedly heard screams coming from the waters of the Sakonnet River.

Emergency personnel were on scene and in the water within 20 minutes. According to Wordell the two victims had already been pulled from the water by a private citizen when Marine 1, the town's fire rescue boat, arrived.

The victims were rescued just past the breakwater.

At least one person is being transported to the hospital, but the extent of injuries to both victims is unknown at this point, said Wordell. Police are still unsure how the pair got into trouble in the water.

As of 8:40 p.m. on Monday, police and fire crews are still on scene.
