Tiverton Police Join Twitter

Residents can now find up-to-the-minute information from the Tiverton Police Department on Twitter.

The Tiverton Police Department is joining the social media trend and learning to tweet.

Earlier this week the department launched a Twitter account, its first foray into the world of social media.

The department's Public Information Officer, Lt. Patrick Jones, said he hopes the account will help keep residents informed on nuances within town, public safety issues, and maybe even a little good news as well.

"The purpose of the twitter account and network is so we can provide citizens and the community and out followers information on updated events from the police department and issues that affect public safety," said Jones, who will be the officer in charge of monitoring the feed.

The department does not have a Facebook page, but Jones said the Twitter format appealed to him as an opportunity to disseminate important information on the go.

The Twitter account will not be monitored 24 hours per day and is not meant as a means for citizens to report emergencies. In the event of an emergency, residents should dial 911.
