The Newport Police Department is investigating what appears to be a random assault against a 42-year-old Newport woman that occurred around 9:45 p.m. on Friday night.

Police official said the woman was walking her dog near Murphy Field at Carroll Avenue and Ruggles Avenue when the suspect got out of a car and assaulted her.

The victim described the suspect as a Hispanic female between 15 to 18 years old with should-length black hair.

According to police reports, the woman suffered minor injuries and refused medical attention.

The suspect was a passenger in the car and was the only person who was involved in the assault, Lt. William Fitzgerald said.

Detectives have several leads and are continuing to investigate the incident.

Fitzgerald said detectives do not believe the incident is connected to other rumored and assaults recently reported throughout the City, which prompted City Manger Jane Howington to call a press conference addressing the issue.

Police have requested that anyone with information about the incident contact Detective Michaud at (401) 845-5775 or call the anonymous TIPS line at (401)846-2606.

As AR notes, if the State is going to continue to burden Newport with the constant influx of Section 8 and transitional residents( halfway houses) then we should demand an increase in Police officers. We are getting big city issues( criminals) and attempting to deal with this with small town mentality politics/ Police. Enough is enough. Enable the Police to fight crime not generate revenue.

Don’t' even get me started on the trashy tourist element that Newport has been attracting in recent years. Really, don’t we have enough t shirt stores? Thankfully, we have a down town porn shop, Wild Orchid, for both tourists and residents to enjoy year round. What a disaster! Come on Newport, get a town planner who's been over the bridge and seen what Newport could be / once was.

AR. I think you should run for mayor! This town has become a total sell out. What happened to that quaint seaside town of years past? It's becoming a circus, or worse the jersey shore!!!
