Police Identify Man Injured At A Tiverton Boat Yard

A Standish Boat Yard employee's condition is improving after suffering extensive crushing injuries when he was pinned underneath a boat late on Monday afternoon.

The condition of a Tiverton-native who was injured in a work-related accident at Standish Boat Yard on Monday evening is improving, said police on Tuesday.

Kyle St. Pierre, 25, currently of Fall River, reportedly suffered serious broken bones in his chest, ribs and pelvis after the supports holding a boat he was painting collapsed at on Main Road, said Lt. Patrick Jones, public information officer to the Tiverton Police.

"He was under the hull painting when the supports gave way and crushed him," said Jones. "Other workers assisted in lifting the boat off of him with a fork lift and after rescue arrived, he was assessed and the decision was made to fly him out."

According to Jones, the pleasure craft-style boat was 35 feet long and weighed approximately 6,000 pounds.

"The workers there actually did a tremendous job getting him out from under the boat," said Acting Chief Craig Committo. "They were actually able to extricate him from under the boat."

St. Pierre was transported via a Boston-based Mediflight helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital from the nearby Fort Brayton Elementary School at about 5:15 p.m. His condition was still listed critical on Tuesday afternoon, though Jones said it was improving.

According to Committo, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating what caused the boat to fall.
