Mediflight Transports Injured Standish Boatyard Worker

A 25-year-old man was air-lifted to Rhode Island Hospital this afternoon after a boat fell on him while working at Standish Boat yard.

UPDATE: A 25-year-old Standish Boat Yard employee was air-lifted to Rhode Island Hospital shortly after 5 p.m. after a boat fell on him, the Tiverton Fire Department confirmed.

According to Craig Committo, acting fire chief, the man sustained serious crushing injuries, including chest trauma after the 32-foot to 35-foot center console-style boat fell on top of him. Committo said the boat was estimated to weigh 5,000 to 8,000 pounds.

"The workers there [at Standish Boat Yard] actually did a tremendous job getting him out from under the boat," said Committo. "They were actually able to extricate him from under the boat."

Committo said workers used a fork lift to pick up the boat prior to arrival by Tiverton Fire Rescue crews.

According to Committo, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating what caused the boat to fall.

Mediflight helicopter picked up the injured man at the Fort Barton Elementary School on Lawton Avenue shortly after the accident ocurred.

"Tiverton Fire Rescue stabilized him for the mediflight to Rhode Island Hospital and packaged him," said Committo.
