A 59-year-old Middletown woman died Thursday night after she was struck by a pickup truck while crossing Bellevue Avenue in Newport.

"Because we were notified of her death late last night, we do not want to release the name until we are certain family has been notified," explained Newport Police Lt. William Fitzgerald Friday morning.

The victim, who owns a shop on Bellevue Avenue, was rushed to Newport Hospital and later transferred to Rhode Island Hospital where she died around 6:30 p.m.

The driver, a 64-year-old man from Exeter, was cited with failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

"The incident is being investigated for the cause of the accident," said Fitzgerald.

Sun glare may have been a factor, said Fitzgerald.

This was the second fatal pedestrian accident in the area within a week. On Wednesday, Robert Silvia, 56, of Newport, died after he was struck by a pick-up truck while crossing Memorial Boulevard at Chapel Street in his wheelchair.

The incidents are under investigation by the Newport Police Department.  Patch will provide details as they are made available.
