Middletown Man Dies at Age 80

Alfred F. Almeida, 80, of Middletown, died Friday, Nov. 29, 2013, at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI.

Born in Middletown, RI, on March 1, 1933, he was the son of the late Manuel F. and Sarah (Lopes) Almeida, Jr., and the husband of Doris (Pinheiro) Almeida.

Almeida served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a firefighter for the town of Middletown for 25 years before retiring. He also worked for Mello Construction for 36 years.

Almeida was very active in his parish, Jesus Saviour, where he was a Trustee, a member of the Bazaar Committee for 30 years, past chairman of the Parish Council, a member of the Feast Committee. Al was a trustee of the Seven Castles Club and served as Chairman of its Scholarship Fund. Mr. Almeida was also very active in the Middletown Knights of Columbus, having been a past Grand Knight and serving as chairman of the Knights of Columbus Scholarship Fund and Past President of the Home Association. He was also a member of the Retired Firefighters Association.

Besides his wife of 57 years, he is survived by his daughter Susan Bishop of Middletown; his son, Stephen Almeida and his wife, Michele of Newport; his brother, Robert M. Almeida of Andover, MN; and his sister, Josephine Lyga, of Portsmouth. Almeida also leaves his granddaughters Stephanie Sims, Jennifer Moniz and Katie Bishop, along with the love of his life, his great granddaughter Mailee.

He was predeceased by his brother, Charles Almeida and sisters Irene Oliveira and Helen Arsenault.
