VILLAGE HARMONY TO PERFORM AT SANDYWOODS THIS SATURDAY

SATURDAY, JULY 20, 2013 - VILLAGE HARMONY

7:30 pm, doors open 7 pm
BYOB & food allowed
Suggested admission $10 adults, $5 children and seniors

Full of music and laughter, this concert, featuring 25 talented and energetic teen singers guided by three adult leaders, promises to be a high-energy musical adventure.

Much-loved Village Harmony veteran Suzannah Park will bring her arrangements of traditional Appalachian songs as well as rollicking sea chanties, gospel songs and Appalachian clogging. Gideon Crevoshay will lead the group in performing traditional and contemporary shape-note songs, early music pieces from Italy and Spain, and an exciting set of songs from Caucasus Georgia. The talented and delightful Natalie Nowytski will contribute musical gems from her vast repertoire of songs from Bulgaria and the Ukraine.

Village Harmony was founded by Larry Gordon in 1988. It began as a small ensemble of high school singers drawn from several central Vermont schools, rehearsing and preparing a concert program for a ten-day spring tour. In 1990 the first Village Harmony summer camp was held, establishing a pattern which has continued ever since: a week-long residential rehearsal week followed by a performing tour with homestays hosted by community sponsors. The organization and its programs have grown steadily and organically. In 1994, the first teen summer camp went overseas, to Russia, and the following year the first of many England camp sessions was held. Village Harmony has since taken study-performance groups to Italy, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Corsica, Bulgaria, Bosnia, Caucasus Georgia, Ukraine, Ghana and South Africa, changing destinations each year, and making repeat visits to favorite countries.

Village Harmony programs have grown almost entirely through word of mouth, and through the wide exposure afforded by extensive touring and distribution of recordings. Over the years Village Harmony has developed a strong international presence, through its many study/performance programs, through its many professional recordings, and through regular tours throughout North America, the UK and western Europe.

In past years Village Harmony has performed on Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion and at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.
