Protestors Pack Sakonnet Bridge To Oppose Tolls

East Bay residents, business owners and island employees, even some living as far as Woonsocket and Johnston, packed the Sakonnet River Bridge to protest tolls Sunday evening.

A 10-cent toll is expected to begin at midnight Monday.

Protesters lined the bridge holding signs, waving flags and hands in air to rally against what is being constantly called a "theft."

"David Darlington, take down the toll. Take down the gantry. Leave us alone," said John Vitkevich, who is leading a campaign for residents to leave their E-ZPass transponder at home.

Many spoke out at the rally against the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority, state legislators and the governor. At least one resident waved a "Governor Gump" sign.

Rep. Raymond Gallison, who has opposed the bridge toll, also joined protesters on the bridge.

Drivers honked their horns in support as they crossed the bridge, which spans Portsmouth and Tiverton.
