In the Future, Will All Buildings Be “Green"?

“Green building” is the practice of using healthier and more natural, energy efficient materials in the construction and operation of a building.

The buildings we work in can affect our health.  We spend so much time in our work places, sometimes 8 to 10 hours a day.  We now know how important it is to be “green ” aka “natural and energy efficient”.  There is a new field called "green building" that is emerging and becoming popular.

“Green building” is the practice of using healthier and more natural, energy efficient materials in the construction and operation of a building.

What is a major component of “green building”?

Though there are many facets to being “green”, being Energy efficient is one of the major components.  This not only saves money in the long run, but is also healthier and safer for our environment and ultimately healthier for us humans.

What is the government doing to help?

The government (EPA) has enacted many programs such as the ENERGY STAR program. This program has helped many business owners save money, resulting in making their buildings “green” and healthier. The mission of the EPA is to protect human health and the environment. The EPA believes in making a healthy environment, a healthy place where people can live and work.

The government has set up a rating system, based on the numbers 1-100, the higher being more energy efficient, in order to rate how a building is doing regarding being energy efficient.  Older buildings can be assessed by this rating system, and know where they have to improve. The Energy Star program can help these owners improve their buildings energy efficiency by offering grants to help lower improvement costs.

New Buildings constructed today, besides meeting local energy codes, also should strive to meet the highest energy efficient ratings. New construction can be energy efficient right from the start, by installing products such as energy efficient windows, doors, HVLS fans, roof products, Geothermal Heat Pumps, and Solar Water Heating.   Becoming energy efficient can help in the following:

  1. Enable sustainable environments
  2. Lower the cost of running a building
  3. Improve energy efficiency
  4. Improve the safety and health for people
