FRIDAY UPDATE: Here's the latest forecast for Friday and the weekend:

Snow Winding Down; Deep Freeze Setting In

The first storm of 2014 is underway as the initial flakes began falling before midnight on Thursday. During the day on Thursday there will be some accumulation, though much of the snow will come Thursday night into Friday before the storm ends by Friday afternoon.

Below is what you need to know about this week's significant winter storm. We will be updating this storm center article throughout the storm, so be sure to check back throughout.

Current Forecasts

How much snow is Tiverton and Little Compton expected to get Thursday and Friday? Here are the projections as of Thursday at 9 a.m.

Forecasts agree that most of Rhode Island will get 6-10 inches, with more possible along the coast. WPRI Channel 12 is calling for as much as a foot of snow north of Providence. It's possible the southern part of the state could get a couple inches less, but forecast totals have been trending up.

School Closed

As of 5 p.m., several Tiverton parents reported receiving a call from the school department. There'll be no school Friday for Tiverton students. It's a snow day!

Portsmouth Public Schools are also closed for Thursday and Friday. This means Little Compton high school students won't return from winter break until Monday.

Other Closings

Tiverton library is closed Thursday and Friday.

Snow Emergency Declared Goes Into Effect

If you normally park your vehicle on the street, you're going to need to make alternative plans on Thursday and Friday.

Do they have to name every storm that shows up now??? Ridiculous... so far it hasn't lived up to the hype... maybe tonight, but how often are the weather people correct?? Seems to me they enjoy getting the elderly and nervous types cranked up!!!

I am relieved it wasn't as bad as they suggested, have electricity, am happy.

I believe Dennis it is because they cannot apply for aid and such to the Federal Government unless it is a named storm. Kind of a scam if you ask me. This was a common snow fall for this time of year and not much of a storm at all. Typical Mark Twain Weather.
