Flood Watch Issued as Heavy Rains Pound Tiverton-Little Compton

A band of heavy rain expected to continue into this evening continues to impact much of Tiverton-Little Compton, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a flood advisory for Newport County.

The advisory — also issued for portions of Providence and Kent counties, as well as areas of Southeastern Massachusetts — remains in effect until 3 p.m. Widespread street flooding is expected, so drivers are advised to take care on the roads. Flooding in areas near streams and ponds and along the coast is also likely.

More than an inch of rain has already fallen across much of the area, the National Weather Service reports, and another 1 to 1.5 inches is likely this afternoon. Heavy downpours could dump upwards of an inch of rain an hour in some areas. Much of the area will continue to see rain showers and scattered thunderstorms into the night, making flooding possible in some areas past the 3 p.m. advisory.

The good new is that by late tomorrow morning, the rain will be long forgotten. Tiverton-Little Compton can expect a return to summer for the weekend with sunny skies and temperatures in the low- to mid-80s Saturday and Sunday.
