Autonomous Boat Returns to RI After Unsuccessful Voyage

Third time's a charm?

A Tiverton's team, attempting a world record for the first unmanned, transatlantic voyage above water, will head back to the drawing board.

Scout, the autonomous transatlantic robot boat, set sail for Spain from Fogland Beach on July 5. The vessel was performing well, voyaging more than 40 miles from the Rhode Island shore.

However, the vessel recently started drifting back, according to Projo.com. A problem with the rudder is suspected as to the reason Scout is now 37 miles from shore, according to the article.

The team will now head back to the shop to try again.

"This was the second attempt-- third time's a charm," the team posted on Facebook Wednesday.

If the team tries again and is successful, Scout will be the first, unmanned vessel to cross over water on the Atlantic Ocean.
