Safe Well Water? Not a sure thing, Test to be sure.

URI and RI Dept of Health offer informational program for private well owners.

KINGSTON, R.I. August 5, 2013 – Your drinking water tastes and smells fine – but, when was the last time you had it tested?  And, what should it be tested for?  In Rhode Island, one in ten residents get their drinking water from a private well.  These private well owners are responsible for testing and maintaining the quality of their own well water.  Following the well testing schedule developed by the RI Department of Health helps private well owners protect their family and identify any potential problems.

To assist private well owners in testing and protecting their drinking water, the RI Department of Health and  URI will host a free educational workshops during the fall.  This two-hour workshop will educate residents about common contaminants, well maintenance, and how to test their well water.  The workshop will be held Monday, September 16, 2013 from 7 – 9 PM at the Little Compton Community Center

“Workshop participants will learn about substances that can affect well water, why they are a concern, how to arrange for a well water test, and well water treatment options,” said Alyson McCann, with URI Cooperative Extension’s Water Quality Program.  Educational handouts will be available and following the workshop experts will be available to answer additional questions.
