Homebuyer Training educates people in the steps involved in buying a home. Purchasing a home is the largest financial transaction most people ever make and is one of the best ways for people to build wealth. A well-informed consumer plans and makes good decisions.

The content of the eight classes includes determining individual affordability, comparing renting to owning, saving money, improving credit, obtaining a mortgage, and learning about land trusts, affordable homeownership options (including new construction in Tiverton & Charlestown) and downpayment assistance programs. In one-on-one meetings with the instructor, each participant creates a spending plan, reviews his/her credit and credit scores and develops an action plan.

A Homebuyer Education Certificate is presented to participants who successfully meet all program requirements. This certificate is accepted by Rhode Island Housing and area banks with programs requiring homebuyer education. The cost for the entire course is $50 per household, plus a $14 per person credit report fee that generates two credit scores.
